College Football Rankings: Who Is Overrated in the Week 13 Polls?
After an exciting slate of games yesterday, there has been a shake-up in both the AP and Coaches' Polls.
So who is overvalued? Who has made a jump inexplicably?
With just two regular season weeks left, these polls are extremely important in clearing up the muddy picture that this season has created.
Who do you think is ranked too high in this poll? Share your thoughts below.
10. Mississippi State
1 of 10
AP Rank: 25
Coaches' Rank: 25
After losing in double overtime to Arkansas on Saturday night, it is easy to make the case for the Bulldogs to stay in the rankings. However, only dropping four spots for a loss is a little light.
Mississippi State isn't outrageously ranked, but after failing to pull the upset, they needed to be dropped out of the rankings in both polls.
And with next week against Ole Miss, I thought they would likely jump back into the rankings next week, anyway.
9. Iowa
2 of 10
AP Rank: 24
Coaches' Rank: 24
After losing their fourth game this season, I think it is time the Hawkeyes dropped out of the Top 25.
Iowa hasn't learned how to finish games this season. The Hawkeyes led in the fourth quarter of every single one of their four losses this season.
Anyone calling them a quality Big Ten opponent is kidding themselves.
6. Utah
3 of 10
AP Rank: 23
Coaches' Rank: 22
Saturday night Utah avoided a third straight loss by scoring 14 fourth-quarter points to come from behind against a feisty San Diego State team.
The Utes stayed in the same spot in the AP but moved up three spots in the Coaches' poll. The Coaches ranking is too high. Any impact that Utah could make this season was over with a loss to TCU.
7. Arizona
4 of 10
AP Rank: 20
Coaches' Rank: 20
Arizona is the highest-ranked team with only seven wins. The Cats have been more mild than wild over the past few weeks, losing back-to-back games before getting a bye this week.
Things don't get any easier for the Wildcats, as they travel to top-ranked Oregon this weekend.
I think they should have stayed at about the same place they were last week, in the 22-23 range.
6. Missouri
5 of 10
AP Rank: 15
Coaches' Rank: 16
Missouri escaped with a win against Iowa State on Saturday. The Tigers only scored 14 points against a team that usually gives up twice that total.
Throw in the fact that Mizzou lost to Texas Tech earlier this season, and the Tigers are about five spots too high.
5. Virginia Tech
6 of 10
AP Rank: 13
Coaches' Rank: 14
The reason I think Virginia Tech is ranked too high is actually twofold.
First, they play in the ACC, the weakest BCS conference.
Secondly, any team that loses to an FCS school, like Tech did to James Madison, should be banned from the rankings for the rest of the season.
4. Alabama
7 of 10
AP Rank: 9
Coaches' Rank: 11
While I do think that Alabama is the best two-loss team in the country, it is a crime that the Crimson Tide is ranked ahead of Oklahoma State or Michigan State.
That isn't to say that Alabama couldn't prove me wrong. With a win over Auburn, they can.
But I just haven't seen enough from last year's champs to warrant them being ranked as high as they are.
3. Ohio State
8 of 10
AP Rank: 8
Coaches' Rank: 7
I can sign off on Ohio State's AP ranking. But I can't for the life of me understand how Ohio State jumps Stanford.
It isn't that the Big Ten is bad, but Stanford's only loss this season was to the consensus top-ranked team in the country on the road in a game that they really had a chance in.
Ohio State, meanwhile, lost to Wisconsin on the road in a game where they really didn't play well.
Just doesn't make any sense to me.
2. LSU
9 of 10
AP Rank: 6
Coaches' Rank: 6
While LSU's only loss came on the road against Auburn, the Tigers have dodged a few bullets this season.
With a comeback against Tennessee earlier this year, a squeaker against Alabama and a comeback against Ole Miss, LSU and Les Miles are playing with house money.
It is only a matter of time before things start crashing down around them.
1. Wisconsin
10 of 10
AP Rank: 5
Coaches' Rank: 5
I really hope that Wisconsin gets to go to the Rose Bowl, and I really hope that they face Stanford in the Rose Bowl game because I really feel that the Cardinal are a better team. They may not have the running backs that Wisconsin has, but they do have a fantastic running back and the most NFL-ready quarterback in college football.
Granted, Ohio State beat Oregon last season in the Rose Bowl, but prior to that the last time the Big Ten beat the Pac-10 in the Granddaddy was in 2000 when Wisconsin beat, guess who, Stanford.
Wisconsin, congrats—you scored 83 against a 4-7 Indiana team. I just can't wait for the fall of Wisconsin in a bowl game.
