Alabama-Auburn: 2010 Iron Bowl Outcome Changes BCS Championship Game

James BrownNov 21, 2010

One of the best rivalries in college football takes place this weekend when the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers clash in the Iron Bowl.

The latest college football odds as posted by BetMania have Alabama surprisingly favored to win this game.

This has always been one of the best rivalries in college football, but with the emergence of Cam Newton and the top ranking for the Tigers, it just got more interesting.

The Auburn Tigers are having an incredible year. They will play in the SEC Championship game, and if they remain undefeated, they will play for the National Championship.

They have the front running Heisman candidate in controversial quarterback Newton, and come into this game with the swagger of a champion.

The Alabama Crimson Tide has not had the football season that they had hoped for. With all of the main pieces back from a championship team, the Tide looked poised to make a run at another title.

Losses on the road to South Carolina and LSU soon put an end to those dreams, but they can get some redemption if they were to beat Auburn.

For Auburn the goal is simple. Win and remain undefeated heading into the SEC Championship game. The Tigers have their sights set on the big picture and the BCS National Championship.

If Auburn loses this game, there is still an outside shot they could play for the National Championship. For Alabama, this game is their season.

In order to win the Tide will have to find a way to try and bottle up Newton, something that has yet to be done this season. Alabama has the No. 1 rated scoring defense in the SEC and are third in total defense.

Coach Nick Saban will have to try and muster up a scheme to stop Newton or to keep the ball away from him.

Playing at home should make life a bit easier for the Tide with the strong support of the home crowd.

From a college football betting angle, the home team has been very profitable as they are 5-1 against the spread (ATS) in their last six meetings. In fact the trends seem to heavily favor the Tide in this contest.

The Crimson Tide is 7-1 ATS in their last eight home games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following a win. The Tigers are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 road games and 2-7 ATS in their last nine road games against a team with a winning home record.

The Tide need this game and will go all out to get the win at home. While it is impossible to stop Newton, the Tide will control time of possession and hope to beat Auburn by keeping the ball away from Newton.

Look for a heavy dose of running behind running back Mark Ingram and a controlled temp by quarterback Greg McElroy. Alabama beats Auburn in the 2010 Iron Bowl by the final score of 27-24 and the debate over who should play in the championship game will really begin to heat up.
