Arkansas Football: Bowl Projections for the Razorbacks

James BrownNov 20, 2010

It’s the time of year when fans try and project where their team will be playing for the upcoming bowl season. With a few games to go the scenarios are plentiful and can change from week to week.

For the Razorbacks the bowl picture is as murky as it can be and the way they end the season will go a long way in determining where they end up playing.

The schedule is not easy for the Razorbacks. They play in Starkville against a demanding Mississippi St bulldog team and then they host the top ranked LSU Tigers to end the season. Here are the current bowl projections for the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Capitol One Bowl

The Capitol One Bowl would have great teams to pick from after the BCS plucks the SEC teams to play in the featured bowls. Alabama, Arkansas, LSU and South Carolina would all be potential players and the most likely choice would be Alabama.

If things were to fall the right way then Arkansas could get plucked for this bowl game, but they seem to be a dark horse selection for the Capitol One Bowl.

Chick-fil-a Bowl

It’s an outside shot, but NBC Sports has the Hogs projected to play in the Chick-fil-a Bowl in Atlanta Georgia.

The story-lines would be abuzz with Bobby Petrino stories since he would be heading back to where he once coached in the NFL.

This bowl features the SEC against the ACC and the projection would have the Razorbacks facing off against the Florida St. Seminoles.

This is a reach in my opinion and the last place the Razorbacks would want to play a bowl game.

Outback Bowl

Other teams see Bobby Petrino and the Razorbacks making a trip to the Outback Bowl. That particular bowl game features the Big Ten against the SEC and it has been rumored that this game could feature a possible match-up between the Razorbacks and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

This would be an interesting game to watch as both teams have different game philosophies. While it would be a decent game—the Hogs have their sights set higher.

Assuming Auburn plays for the national championship, then LSU could be a mortal lock for the Sugar bowl and the increased revenue it would bring, but where would that leave the Razorbacks?

The Hogs have an excellent chance of paying in the AT&T Cotton bowl. The location is perfect and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would love to have his beloved Hogs playing in his brand new stadium.

If that is the location the Hogs would face a Big 12 team and it could very well be Oklahoma St. That game would be a great draw and provide plenty of scoring by both teams.

It’s not really a stretch to see the Razorbacks in a top rated bowl but they would have to sweep the last two games and then hope they really take it to LSU.

At that time LSU should be ranked at least No. 5 in the country and a convincing win could propel the Hogs to the top of the BCS polls.

If the Hogs sweep the schedule they could easily nab a BCS at-large spot and a trip to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl.

However that could all change if LSU beats the Hogs in the last game of the season.

The Bowl picture will get clearer as the season winds down and the only thing that the Razorbacks and the fans should be worrying about is winning ballgames.
