Cam Newton Investigation: 10 Reasons Why Newton's Situation Is Worse Than Reggie

Alex CallosNov 19, 2010

With the investigation into Auburn star quarterback Cameron Newton now underway, speculation is swarming as to what this Heisman hopeful is actually guilty of.

Is his dad really the only one to blame, or did Cam know what he was getting into?

In recent years, scandals have occurred at many different universities, and while some have been bigger than others, certainly the most talked about in recent memory is that of former USC star and former Heisman winner Reggie Bush.

Bush was forced to return his Heisman trophy a few months back, and while his investigation was front-page news, the Cameron Newton saga has reached a whole new level.

Here are ten reasons why the Cam Newton scandal is already far worse than Reggie Bush's ever was.

10. Paid to Go to School

Reggie Bush clearly received numerous benefits while attending USC, but he certainly wasn't the first nor will he be the last to do so.

The fact that Cam Newton is allegedly getting paid to play for a university is unprecedented. It has almost certainly happened before, but not to this extent, and the amount of money that is being discussed is monumental.

Newton is in a league all his own, both on and off the field, and it is not a league anybody wants to be associated with.

9. The Success of the Auburn Tigers

The fact that this investigation is ongoing while Auburn is having one of its best seasons in school history is a sad story in itself.

A dark cloud has recently formed over the entire university, and what a dark time it has become.

There is nothing as bad as a great season being overshadowed by an NCAA investigation. Newton was a lock to win the Heisman a month ago, and now whether he will play each week is up in the air.

At least the Reggie Bush investigation took place after the fact, making things far less stressful for Bush and the USC program.

8. Cecil Newton

There is always the possibility that Cam Newton had nothing to do with the money being exchanged between the universities and his father.

If that is true, then Cam has his father to thank for potentially ruining one of the greatest seasons by a college football player in recent memory.

If Cecil Newton took the 200K, then his son is still guilty and will have to face the consequences along with the Auburn University.

Newton may have used the money for a good cause, but if the allegations prove to be true, what he did was wrong and he will have to watch as his son pays the price.

7. No Heisman

Through 11 games, Newton has already amassed nearly 40 touchdowns and is having a sure-fire Heisman season.

Too bad there is a good chance he will never get to hold the most famous trophy in all of sports. That is, if the NCAA and FBI have their way.

At least Reggie Bush had the opportunity to enjoy the trophy for a few years before it was stripped away.

On the field, nobody is better, and it would truly be a shame if Newton doesn't receive the honor.

6. Perfect Season Marred by Scandal

Historically, Auburn University has always had a little trouble keeping its program in order, and for some reason, a few of the Tigers' best seasons have been marred with controversy.

In 1957, the Tigers went undefeated while they were on probation. The same occurred in 1993. Something similar is beginning to occur this year, and die-hard Auburn fans can't help but think back to those previous seasons scarred by probation.

The Cam Newton saga is bringing back past season's that Tiger fans would soon like to forget.

5. The Involvement of the SEC

Is it just me, or is the entire SEC throwing Cam Newton and the Auburn Tigers under the bus?

First former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond informed the NCAA of wrongdoing, and then the man always at the center of any controversy, Urban Meyer, had to open his big mouth.

Many are speculating that Meyer is at the center of all the controversy and has thrown Newton under the bus. Honestly, it wouldn't be that far-fetched.

Whatever happened to sticking up for your conference and defending your league?

I know the SEC has a lot of pride, and it seems Urban Meyer failed to defend his former player.

Shame on him and the SEC.

4. Horrible Timing

Not many athletes have been investigated as thoroughly as Cameron Newton has this past month. Not to mention the fact that he is in the running for a Heisman Trophy and a National Championship.

The pressure he is under has to be immense.

Reggie Bush, on the other hand, was away from the investigation while it was ongoing, and did not have to deal with nearly the scrutiny that Newton has had to undergo.

3. The Involvement of the FBI

Anytime the FBI gets involved, there is definitely something serious happening. The FBI means business and it is not going to take its time to find answers like the NCAA does. That does not bode well for young Cam.

Former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond was interviewed by the FBI this past week, and once the FBI is through with its investigation, it is looking more likely that Newton will be forced to sit out.

The fact that the FBI is investigating certainly stands out. While Reggie Bush was investigated thoroughly, the FBI was never involved, and the Bush investigation dragged out for over five years.

A verdict with the Newton situation will come sooner rather than later, and as sad as it is to say, it is not looking good for the University of Auburn or Newton.

2. The Uncertain State of College Football

The Cam Newton saga has brought to life a growing problem in the world of college sports, particularly college football.

There will come a time where student-athletes receive some type of weekly allowance, but until that time comes, there will be more and more situations like this one.

The Reggie Bush saga was simply a story we have heard so many times about a player receiving improper benefits.

The Cameron Newton story has reached a whole new level, and paying a player to attend a university is unethical and possibly a sign of things to come in NCAA football.

1. Endless Media Scrutiny

With Twitter, Facebook and many other types of media outlets, news can reach the entire country in minutes.

That does not bode well for Cam Newton. With each day the investigation continues, more and more speculation arises.

While it has only been a few years since the Reggie Bush investigation began, over that time period a lot has changed with how quickly media can reach the public.

Cam Newton is smack dab in the middle of one of the biggest investigations in recent memory and there is no way out.
