Kansas City Chiefs: Dwayne Bowe and 10 Things To Watch For vs. Arizona Cardinals
The Kansas City Chiefs will be happy to back home this weekend for their Week 11 match-up against a struggling Arizona Cardinals team.
The Cardinals come in at 3-6 and are losers of four straight games. The Chiefs are coming off two tough losses on the road against division foes Oakland and Denver, and are looking for a bit of redemption against a free-falling Arizona squad.
The game will also mark the first game in which Chiefs head coach Todd Haley has played his former team, where he was offensive coordinator from 2007-09. You can bet that Arrowhead will be loud and everyone will be fired up for this game as the Chiefs are trying to win in order to not let their season slip away from them.
10. How well the offensive line performs
1 of 10
The Chiefs o-line has struggled mightily in its last three games, as it has allowed opposing defenses to sack QB Matt Cassel a combined 10 times during that stretch.
They need to start protecting Cassel better and this Sunday's game against Arizona could help boost their recent level of play as the Cardinals are ranked 30th in the league for total defense.
Veterans Casey Wiegmann and Brian Waters need to step up their game and get this once solid KC offensive line back on the right track.
9. How the defense responds to the loss in Denver
2 of 10
The KC defense was fully exposed last Sunday in Denver as the Broncos were able to roll up 49 points on them.
The Chiefs secondary, which was an area that has really struggled the last couple of games, will likely be upgraded with injured starting safety Kendrick Lewis and injured reserve safety Jon McGraw having a a good chance to play.
Kansas City's front seven will need to play will against the Cardinals or otherwise the KC secondary might be exposed again by having to cover explosive receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston all day.
8. If Todd Haley can handle his emotions better
3 of 10
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley has been known to let his emotions get the best of him from time to time because he is a very passionate coach.
Last Sunday against Denver, Haley refused to give a post-game handshake to Denver coach Josh McDaniels, and instead pointed at him and simply walked away.
This kind of behavior is not going to make Haley a better coach, and over time will not send a good message to a young and maturing Chiefs team. He needs to do a better job in controlling his emotions and be a more respectful leader of this team.
7. How much the Chiefs use Dexter McCluster
4 of 10
Chiefs rookie wide receiver Dexter McCluster has been out for three games now with an ankle sprain and is likely to be back for this Sunday's game against Arizona.
This is great news for Kansas City, as they desperately need another the speedy play-maker from Ole Miss to contribute to this team once again.
The question with him is how healthy will he be, if he plays, and how much will the Chiefs use him in areas like the passing, running and returning games? Hopefully he will be healthy enough to help out in all three of these areas for KC.
6. If Dwayne Bowe comes back down to earth
5 of 10
Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe had a career game on Sunday against the Broncos as he recorded 13 catches for 186 yards and scored two touchdowns as well.
This is a great sign for Bowe, who still hasn't completely lived up to his first round pick status so far in his NFL career.
D-Bowe has rarely been able to turn in back-to-back great games in his current four-year stint in the league, and this Sunday would be a great time to do it again.
5. Matt Cassel's progress
6 of 10
Chiefs QB Matt Cassel has made some strides this season, whether his skeptics think so or not.
For the year now, Cassel has 16 touchdown passes, to go along with just four interceptions and an amazing QB rating of 94.5.
He will have a good chance to add to these numbers this week as he be squaring off against the 27th ranked passing defense in the NFL.
4. The efficiency of the running game
7 of 10
With the two-headed monster of Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones currently manning the KC backfield, the Chiefs have catapulted to the league's top ranked rushing attack.
Charles has been electrifying at times and is putting up Pro-Bowl type numbers this year for the Chiefs.
Kansas City should be able to get its ground game going once again this Sunday, as Arizona also struggles in run defense, as they are ranked 28th in the league in this category.
3. The Chiefs' pass rush
8 of 10
Kansas City's pass rush was mainly nonexistent last week in Denver and this needs to change very soon.
Veteran linebacker Tamba Hali is second in the AFC in sacks with eight and also is at the top of the league in QB hurries.
Defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel needs to get this recent pass rush issue fixed and blitzing early and often against a mostly stagnant Arizona offense could be just what the doctor ordered.
2. Derrick Johnson's recent dominance
9 of 10
Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson is quietly putting together a Pro-Bowl season for the red and gold as he 77 tackles, 10 pass deflections, three forced fumbles and an interception this season.
He has really been active this year in run defense and has been a tackling machine of late.
Johnson will need to continue this kind of play on Sunday and beyond if he wants to lock up his first Pro Bowl selection and also send his team to the playoffs.
1. How much the Arrowhead crowd will affect the game
10 of 10
Many people around Kansas City dub Arrowhead as the "12th man" when the Chiefs play their home games. In all honesty, who can blame them?
Arrowhead is one of the toughest places to play in the NFL and is always one of the loudest venues as well.
This will be no different this Sunday when the Chiefs take on the Cardinals, only it could be a big problem for the Cardinals to deal with throughout the day.
