Pac-10 Football: Lack Of Bowl Teams Reflects Poorly On Conference

William BoorNov 15, 2010

The end of the college football season is approaching and fans have begun to look at which bowls their teams may be playing in.

While Oregon and Stanford have BCS dreams, the rest of the Pac-10 may be watching the bowls from their homes

Arizona is the only other team in the Pac-10 that is currently bowl eligible (USC has the qualifying six wins, but can not go bowling due to NCAA sanctions). Oregon State, Cal, and UCLA still have opportunities to gain eligibility, but it is likely that Cal will be the only one of the three to record victory number six.

While many will say that this proves parody within the conference, it is never a good thing when a conference is unable to put teams into the bowl games that they have tie-in for.

If either six or seven of the ten Pac-10 teams miss out on the bowl season, the Pac-10 will lose revenue and exposure. It also makes the conference appear weak on the national stage if only three teams finish above .500.

For a conference that is constantly talked about as one of the elite conferences in the country, 2010 was not very productive.

Several teams including Cal, Washington, and Oregon State had very disappointing seasons and were unable to live up to the preseason hype that looked so promising for the Pac-10.

The offseason will provide plenty of storylines for the 2011 Pac-12 because of expansion and the debut of a title game, however Pac-10 fans will need to hope that their teams can live up to the expectations and hype, which is something that was not done in 2010, but needs to be done for future revenue and credibility.
