BCS Rankings Projection: Will Auburn's Win Push the Tigers Back To No. 1?
Here we go again...
This week was supposed to be relatively quiet, featuring few games with the potential for upset.
College football is never dull, but in a season filled with big time upsets, this week was relatively pedestrian.
#2 Auburn struggled to put unranked Georgia away at home, while Cal lost to #1 Oregon by two, and #3 TCU pulled out a 40-35 victory over San Diego State.
Outside of normally slow Wisconsin dropping 83 points on hapless Indiana, and Utah being spanked by Notre Dame, and Iowa losing to Northwestern, again, everything pretty much played out as expected.
So, was Oregon's close win enough to drop them to #2?
Here are this week's BCS top 15 BCS projections.
#15: Missouri Tigers
1 of 15
Current BCS ranking - 17
The Tigers and quarterback Blaine Gabbert experienced a massive letdown this season, losing two in a row after taking down then #1 Oklahoma.
The Tigers find themselves back in the top 15 by virtue of a win over #24 Kansas State, coupled with losses by a few teams ahead of them.
Missouri has an easy road the rest of the season with only Kansas and Iowa State left on the schedule.
This week's result: 38-28 win over #24 Kansas State
#14: Oklahoma Sooners
2 of 15
Current BCS Ranking - #16
The Sooners soared as high as #1 in the rankings before being dropped by Missouri.
After a 45-7 shellacking of Texas Tech, the Sooners will find themselves at #14, and with games against Baylor and #10 Oklahoma State remaining on the schedule, the Sooners will find themselves with an opportunity to move up even further in the rankings.
This week's result: 45-7 win over Texas Tech
#13: Arkansas Razorbacks
3 of 15
Current BCS Ranking - #15
If Arkansas continues it's current trend of losing only to teams from Alabama, the Razorbacks will find themselves in a very solid bowl game come the end of December.
After a convincing 58-21 beating of UTEP, the Razorbacks have only #19 Mississippi State and #5 LSU remaining on the schedule.
With only one win over a current top 25 BCS team, Ryan Mallett and co. could use a few quality wins.
This week's result: 58-21 win over UTEP
#12 Alabama Crimson Tide
4 of 15
Current BCS Ranking - #12
The Tide put away #19 Mississipi State pretty handily, 30-10.
Going into the end of the season, the Tide look to be the only potential roadblock in #2 Auburn's path.
Marcel Dareus and friends will need to find a way to contain Auburn's Cam Newton.
This week's result: 30-10 win over #19 Mississippi State
#11: Michigan State Spartans
5 of 15
Current BCS Ranking - #11
The Spartans have had a roller coaster season, beating Notre Dame early in the season on a fake punt, watching their coach recover from heart trouble, and rising as high as #5 in the BCS rankings before being pummeled by Iowa.
Even though they sit atop the Big Ten standings, Michigan State is hurting for BCS points, especially considering Iowa lost to unranked Purdue this weekend, making the Spartans lone loss look even worse.
Idle
#10: Oklahoma State Cowboys
6 of 15
Current BCS Ranking - #10
The Cowboys took out Texas this weekend(who hasn't), and only have Kansas and a huge battle with Oklahoma remaining.
Receiver Justin Blackmon looks to be the most NFL ready receiver in the country.
This week's result : 33-16 win over Texas
#9: Ohio State Buckeyes
7 of 15
Current BCS Ranking - #9
The Buckeyes are another former BCS #1 struggling to remain relevant in the BCS race.
The fighting sweater-vests defeated JoePa's Nittany Lions to remain in the Big Ten hunt.
This week's result : 38 - 14 win over Penn State
#8: Nebraska Cornhuskers
8 of 15
Current BCS ranking - #8
The Cornhuskers currently sit in the driver's season of the Big 12 North, and are in great position to remain in the BCS top ten if they win out.
With a potential Big 12 Championship match-up against Oklahoma State looming, the 'Huskers need to be hitting on all cylinders.
This week's result: 20-3 win over Kansas
#7: Stanford Cardinal
9 of 15
Current BCS ranking - #6
Stanford needed a bogus facemask call to keep their final drive alive and score the winning touchdown against unranked Arizona State.
The Cardinal are hoping for a Rose Bowl berth if Oregon finishes undefeated, and have only Cal and Oregon State remaining on the schedule this season.
The Cardinal drop a spot after barely eking out the victory.
This week's result: 17-13 win over Arizona State
#6: Wisconsin Badgers
10 of 15
Current BCS ranking - #7
The Badgers rolled over Indiana to jump to #6 in the rankings.
As one of the leaders of the Big Ten, the Badgers have to score a ton of points and win to gain ground in the BCS rankings.
The Badgers started third string running back, Montee Ball against Indiana, and he responded with three touchdowns.
This week's result: 83-10 win over Indiana
#5: LSU Tigers
11 of 15
Current BCS ranking - #5
The Bayou Bengals have little hope of playing in the SEC championship game, but this may actually help them in the long run.
If Auburn stumbles against Alabama or in the SEC championship game, the Tigers are lurking in the wings to potentially slide into the BCS championship game.
This week's result: 51-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe
#4: Boise State Broncos
12 of 15
Current BCS ranking - #4
The Broncos just continue to win.
Even though TCU is currently ahead of the Broncos in the BCS rankings, the Broncos are hoping for a chacne to sneak into the national championship game.
BSU remains at this spot, still trying to prove they belong on top with the big boys.
This week's result: 52-14 win over Idaho
#3: TCU Horned Frogs
13 of 15
Current BCS ranking - #3
The Horned Frogs are in prime position to take a spot in the national championship game if Oregon or Auburn slips in the next few weeks.
Even after a close win, TCU stays ahead of BSU this week, by virtue of a huge difference in points in the BCS rankings.
This week's result: 40-35 win over San Diego State
#2: Oregon Ducks
14 of 15
Current BCS ranking - #1
The Ducks have steamrolled through almost every opponent this season, averaging 50.7 points per contest to lead the nation.
However, a difficult battle against unranked Cal leaves the Ducks back at #2 in the rankings.
This week's result: 15-13 win over Cal
#1: Auburn Tigers
15 of 15
Current BCS ranking - #2
Even with all the controversy swirling around star quarterback, Cam Newton, the Tigers retained their focus and put away a pesky Georgia team.
Newton became the first player in SEC history to rush for over 1,000 yards and pass for over 2,000.
The Tigers now look forward to the Iron Bowl next week.
This week's result: 49-31 win over Georgia
