Miami Hurricanes Football: Stephen Morris Needs To Be Miami's Quarterback

Bleacher ReportNov 8, 2010

Other than coaching, what has every station, blog and Bleacher Report article said was the Miami Hurricanes' main problem? Jacory Harris.

The better question is who the Hurricanes' starting quarterback should be. That answer is true freshman Stephen Morris.

I understand that Harris has been with Miami for three years now, and that last year, he had one of the best seasons as a quarterback, statistically, minus the interceptions.

So why Morris?

I made up my mind after the Virginia game, when Morris came in and brought the Hurricanes back from the dead.

I understand that his stats are not jaw-dropping.  He has three touchdown passes and four interceptions in two games.

The differences between Morris and Harris are huge though. Morris has a stronger arm, can run and doesn't get rattled. That is Harris's main problem. He is so shaken mentally that he has lost all confidence in his arm.

Morris, on the other hand, has a huge arm and knows how to use it.

Is he as accurate as Harris? It's hard to say right now, but he has a rocket of an arm. Every throw he makes is in a straight line, and not a lame duck that Harris throws.

Defensive backs and linebackers can always adjust to a Harris throw because he puts entirely way too much air under his passes.

Granted, Morris had a few misreads in last week's win over Maryland, but overall he had a pretty good game, especially for a freshman. He went 18-for-30 for 286 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

That gives him four total touchdowns in two games (one rushing).

In his first start, he completed 60 percent of his passes and led the Hurricanes to an exciting 26-20 comeback win with a 35-yard strike to Leonard Hankerson with 37 seconds left in the game.

There is just something about Morris that I really like, and if Miami wants to look ahead to the future, it will start with No. 17, not No. 12.
