College Football Rankings: Who Is Overrated in the Week 11 Coaches and AP Polls?
College Football Rankings.
The polls have been released and the coaches and media members have logged in their votes for Week 11. Just like every Sunday, we're here to figure out who's getting too much attention and love in the polls.
We all know by now that the pundits aren't necessarily perfect. They make mistakes too.
Who's overrated in the AP and coaches' polls? Let's take a look.
10. Virginia Tech Hokies
1 of 10
The Hokies rank No. 16 on the AP polls and No. 17 on the coaches' poll.
But do they really deserve to be ranked that high on both polls?
VaTech has won seven straight games, after losing their first two. On Saturday, they were able to escape with a 28-21 win against a Georgia Tech squad that has four losses this season.
It goes without saying that outside of Boise State, in the first week of the season, this team has no really been challenged. In fact, they had an embarrassing loss to James Madison in Week 2.
There are other teams such as Arizona and Mississippi State that have a stronger claim to be ranked above them.
Mississippi State's two losses this season came against tough SEC and Top 10 foes Auburn and LSU. They also defeated Florida, on the road. That's a much tougher schedule than Virginia Tech.
Arizona has a big win against top-ranked Iowa, under their belt. Their two losses came against a very good Stanford team and a Pac-10 rival in Oregon State.
9. UCF Knights
2 of 10
The Knights are perfect in conference play this season with a 5-0 record but they play in a rather weak Conference USA.
At No. 23 on the coaches' poll they rank over the North Carolina State Wolfpack and the Kansas State Wildcats.
Both of those teams may have three loses this season but they've played through tougher schedules and are also responsible for defeating the overrated Knights this year.
NC State defeated UFC, 28-21 and KC State took them down, 17-13.
8. Nevada Wolf Pack
3 of 10
The Wolf Pack have been getting a lot of love from pollsters this season, but does an 8-1 record necessarily warrant a spot in the Top 25?
They rank No. 21 on both the media and coaches' polls.
Just like the Boise State Broncos, they play in the WAC which leaves them with a shortage of top competition.
Their biggest win this season was an out of conference match against a mediocre Cal Bears squad. But they also lost to WAC rivals Hawaii.
Nevada's schedule is weak. They may have one loss but there are much better teams out there that deserves more recognition, such as a 7-2 San Diego State team, even a 6-3 Texas A&M.
7. South Carolina Gamecocks
4 of 10
The Gamecocks are overrated because they still rank at No. 22 on both the AP and coaches' polls a day after taking their third loss of the year.
It's obvious that this team has been battling with inconsistencies all year. That Alabama win earlier this season has given them a lot of recognition this year but that Crimson Tide team lost for the second time this year against LSU and have not looked as strong as a year ago.
Since that big win, South Carolina had a meltdown against Kentucky and are fresh off a deflating loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks who dominated them 41-20.
Dropping from No. 18 last week to No. 22 this week does not make sense for this squad.
6. Utah Utes
5 of 10
The Utes were ranked at No. 6 just a week ago on both polls.
But that embarrassing loss to TCU on Saturday made them look like they were only pretenders.
Either TCU is better than anyone would have thought, or Utah was just not as good as we thought they were.
Utah just has not shown they can beat good opponents with their weak schedule.
At the very least, they should have managed to stay close against the Horned Frogs in that big Mountain West showdown but they didn't
Now they just look overrated even at No. 15 on both polls.
5. Michigan State Spartans
6 of 10
Wasn't it just over a week ago that the Spartans were soundly defeated by the Iowa Hawkeyes?
As a result, Michigan State was ranked behind Iowa at No. 16 in last week's coaches' polls.
On Saturday, Michigan State defeated the Big Ten's worst, Minnesota Golden Gophers and immediately shot up to No. 10 in the polls.
That's just not right. Iowa defeated a much better Indiana Hoosiers squad but only jumped up to No. 13.
Iowa should still be ranked above Michigan State this week. Since they're not, the Spartans are just looking too overrated on the coaches' polls.
4. Ohio State Buckeyes
7 of 10
Ohio State is at the No. 8 spot on the AP and No. 7 spot on the coaches' poll, which is just too high for this squad.
On the coaches' poll they are just two spots behind the Wisconsin Badgers, ranked No. 5, and gave them their first loss of the season.
With just an early season win against a now-unranked Miami (Fl.) team and a recent loss to the Badgers, the Buckeyes just have not played enough tough games this year to think of them as a Top 10 football team.
3. Missouri Tigers
8 of 10
The Tigers are reeling with two straight losses.
Their most recent loss dropped them from No. 14 on the coaches' poll to No. 20, but that was an embarrassing loss to a Texas Tech squad with four losses.
That big loss should have dropped them back farther than just six spots in the polls.
A week earlier they were handily defeated by the Nebraska Cornhuskers 31-17.
The truth is, the Tigers may not have been as good as we initially thought. Now with two losses at number 20 in the coaches rankings, they're looking slightly overrated.
2. Wisconsin Badgers
9 of 10
The Badgers rose all the way up to No. 5 on the coaches' poll this Sunday, after being ranked No. 7 last week.
On Saturday, the Badgers defeated an unranked Purdue team. While LSU beat the defending national champions, Alabama.
There's a strong argument that the LSU win should have earned them more respect on the polls.
Considering both teams have 8-1 records, LSU should be ranked higher. Otherwise Wisconsin looks overrated.
1. Florida Gators
10 of 10
Florida finds themselves back in the Top 25 this week, as they are ranked No. 24 on both polls.
But they have not looked very good all season, even in wins Florida's squad has looked out of sorts.
This team are just a few weeks removed from a three-game losing streak in which they lost two games at the Swamp.
However, a big win against a weak Vanderbilt team suddenly puts them back in the coaches' rankings.
With three losses this year, Texas A&M has a strong claim to be the better ranked team in the standings.
