Power Rankings The ACC Recruiting Classes: Who's No. 1, FSU or Clemson?

Michael PintoNov 5, 2010

The ACC is top heavy when it comes to 2011 recruiting, with only Florida State, Clemson and North Carolina ranking in the top 25, but the conference is still third overall; ahead of the Pac-10, Big Ten and Big East.

With Miami and Virginia Tech struggling to bring in the talent at their usual pace, the No. 1 ranking in the ACC has come down to a two-horse race between the Seminoles and Tigers.

Both schools have some of the top talent in the nation on the books and have a shot of landing even more blue chips before this race is done.

Here are the power rankings for the 2011 recruiting classes of the ACC.

12. North Carolina State

1 of 12

5-Star Commitments: 0

4-Star Commitments: 0

3-Star Commitments: 0

NC State has one of the worst recruiting classes of any school from the BCS conferences. The Wolfpack don't have a single 3-star or higher recruit unless you count punter Wil Baumann as Scout.com does. They're barely hanging on to a spot in the top 100.

11. Wake Forest

2 of 12

5-Star Commitments: 0

4-Star Commitments: 0

3-Star Commitments: 7

Wake Forest has only nine commitments, one more than NC State, but the Demon Deacons at least have seven 3-star prospects to show for it. Of the group they have: a couple of nice offensive guards in Cody Preble and Dylan Intemann, as well as safety Sherman Ragland.

10. Maryland

3 of 12

5-Star Commitments: 0

4-Star Commitments: 0

3-Star Commitments: 11

Maryland has 17 commitments, with 11 receiving a 3-star grade. That's not quite good enough to make the top 50 in the nation, but it's right on the cusp. While most of the Terrapins recruits come on the offensive side of the ball, they have some decent defenders coming in as well.

9. Georgia Tech

4 of 12

5-Star Commitments: 0

4-Star Commitments: 0

3-Star Commitments: 14

Some might rank Georgia Tech's class much higher up the rankings, but we value quality over quantity and 14 3-star commitments isn't quite as attractive to us as what Boston College, Miami and Virginia Tech have lined up.

8. Duke

5 of 12

5-Star Commitments: 0

4-Star Commitments: 0

3-Star Commitments: 12

Duke is in the same boat as Georgia Tech, but the Blue Devils are packing more ammunition. Duke's 24 commitments is the highest total in the nation, leading Texas by one. Of course, of those 24 prospects only 12 have received a 3-star grade.

7. Boston College

6 of 12

5-Star Commitments: 0

4-Star Commitments: 1

3-Star Commitments: 11

Boston College might not have the numbers that Duke has, or as many 3-stars as GT, but the Eagles do have a top 10 tight end in Brian Miller and top 25 talent at middle linebacker and offensive guard in Nick Lifka and Kieran Borcich, respectively.

6. Virginia

7 of 12

5-Star Commitments: 0

4-Star Commitments: 1

3-Star Commitments: 16

Virginia's class could be considered to be on the cusp of the top 25, but we disagree. Where the Cavaliers are strong in numbers, they are lacking in talent. None of their 21 commitments are ranked in the top 25 at their position and 4-star receiver Clifton Richardson is rated purely on potential— he needs a lot of work.

5. Virginia Tech

8 of 12

5-Star Commitments: 0

4-Star Commitments: 3

3-Star Commitments: 7

Virginia Tech, like Miami, is having an unusually unproductive year recruiting. The Hokies only have three 4-star prospects and currently rank outside the top 30 classes for 2011. VT's class is also defense dominated with 9 of it's 12 commitments coming on that end.

4. Miami

9 of 12

5-Star Commitments: 1

4-Star Commitments: 2

3-Star Commitments: 4

Miami has only seven commitments on the books, but they've made them count with limited scholarships available. The Hurricanes might be short on numbers, but with 5-star quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and safety Albert Louis-Jean headlining the class, Miami has two of the top prospects in the nation.

3. North Carolina

10 of 12

5-Star Commitments: 1

4-Star Commitments: 4

3-Star Commitments: 11

We currently rank North Carolina at No. 17 in our November edition of the top 25 classes, but you could argue the Tar Heels deserve more credit than that, especially on offense. North Carolina has 5-star offensive tackle Kiaro Holts and 4-star quarterbacks Everett Golson and Marquise Williams.

2. Clemson

11 of 12

5-Star Commitments: 2

4-Star Commitments: 4

3-Star Commitments: 10

Clemson packs quite a punch on offense, ranking out with the 12th-best class in the country. With 5-star running back Mike Bellamy, one of our favorites, 5-star receiver Charone Peake, 4-star running back Marlin Lane, and 4-star tight end/offensive tackle Eric MacLain, the Tigers are stacked with playmakers.

1. Florida State

12 of 12

5-Star Commitments: 2

4-Star Commitments: 4

3-Star Commitments: 10

Florida State and Clemson are very close for the top spot in the conference with the same number of 5-star, 4-star and 3-star commitments. We give the edge to the Seminoles though for one simple reason, James Wilder. The versatile athlete might be the best overall prospect in the country.
