NBA Power Rankings: Shaquille O'Neal, Ray Allen And The 2011 All-Old-Guy Team
There are 18 NBA players at or over the age of 35 to start off the 2010-11 season. They would make one good and old team.
Here the old guys are run down from 18 to 1 in order of use so far this young season and what they bring to their respective teams in their grizzled old age.
The oldest guy in the league is Shaq, who was a rookie in 1992-93! No wonder so many young fans fail to realize that if you take into consideration his entire career he is the best player alive in the league today.
Kurt Thomas
1 of 18
#18 - Backup Center/PF - Kurt Thomas - Chicago Bulls - The 38-year-old is the second oldest guy in the league, after Shaq, and he has played three minutes so far in the first week. The Bulls may use the old man a little more later in the season when the youngsters start to fake injuries and such. Thomas lasted this long because he never made excuses.
Juwan Howard
2 of 18
#17 - Backup PF - Juwan Howard - Miami Heat - Remember when Howard was a big time player with the Bullets, along with Cheaney, Webber and Strickland? Now, the 37 year old may be on a title team by the end of the year. He would be rewarded for all those years of just playing the game. He has only played four minutes in the first week but he's patient.
Jerry Stackhouse
3 of 18
#16 - Backup SF/SG - Jerry Stackhouse - Miami Heat - Stack came out of retirement for the second straight season to play with LeBron on a stacked Miami team. Stackhouse has been around forever and has played in the 90's and 2000's era. He is 35 now and still has some big shots in the tank.
Joe Smith
4 of 18
#15 - Backup PF/C - Joe Smith - New Jersey Nets - This man has played everywhere over the years and went from a 20 ppg scorer early in his career to a journeyman. The 35 year old is now used as a veteran influence for the young, rebuilding, Nets. He is averaging seven minutes per game early on.
Fabricio Oberto
5 of 18
#14 - Backup C/PF - Fabricio Oberto - Portland Trailblazers - This old man he plays sticks. Oberto signed with the Blazers because Oden still is injured. He is 35 now but still capable of doing some stuff, especially not being injured. He is averaging 10 minutes per game so far.
Theo Ratliff
6 of 18
# 13 - Backup - C/PF - Theo Ratliff - L.A. Lakers - The 37-year-old undersized canter is still in the league because he never played to be noticed, he just played defense and did it good. So far he is averaging one block and zero points in 10.3 minutes for the Lakers. Still a good defender.
Zydrunas Ilgauskas
7 of 18
#12 - Backup C - Zydrunas Ilgauskas - Miami Heat - Followed LeBron to Miami and that was a smart move. Imagine the 35 year old still on Cleveland. Nope; he's down with the King and down for the crown. Smart guy who has lasted many years because of it.
Anthony Carter
8 of 18
#11- Backup PG - Anthony Carter - Denver Nuggets - He is 35 and still helping run the show in Denver, albeit in limited minutes. He is only playing 15.9 minutes per game so far and putting up 3.3 points per game. He will be a bigger part of the team come playoff time.
Antonio McDyess
9 of 18
#10 - Backup PF - Antonio McDyess - San Antonio Spurs - He was on the Pistons after they won it all in 2004 and on the Spurs after they won it all in 2007. Can the 36 year old help led S.A. to one last title? He is averaging a stellar 5 points and 8 rebounds per game in 21 minutes a night for the Spurs early on.
Shaquille O'Neal
10 of 18
#9 - Backup C - Shaquille O'Neal - Boston Celtics - The Big Shamrock is still around after 19 straight seasons! If only he could find the pot of youth at the end of the rainbow, he would destroy the league. Father time sucks - at least in basketball. Shaq is still a big part of Boston's 2011 attack.
Ben Wallace
11 of 18
#8 - Backup C/PF - Ben Wallace - I thought he was done but so far this season he is early on putting up four points and 10.3 rebounds per game in 24.7 minutes per night for the lowly Pistons. He will always have 2004. He is now 36 but still knows how to rule the lane, obviously.
Derek Fisher
12 of 18
#7 - Backup PG - Derek Fisher - The little engine that could is now 36 but it doesn't matter. He provides steady veteran advice and play for the Lakers. He is already being used 26 minutes a night and scoring nine ppg which is above his career average.
Anthony Parker
13 of 18
6th Man - SG - Anthony Parker - He is 35 but seems a lot younger. His attitude and mobility are rather youthful. Maybe that is why the hapless Cavs are playing him 31.7 minutes per night and scoring 10.7 per game so far. His three shooting is still on. He still can't stop Shaq though, as pictured.
Ray Allen
14 of 18
#5 - Starter - Ray Allen - Boston Celtics - He is now 35 and officially the old man on the Celtics. He is one year older than KG and two years older than PP, but he still so far is scoring 14.7 pts per night in a whopping 38.3 minutes per game. He is still the smoothest shooter in the league.
Grant Hill
15 of 18
#4 - Starter - Grant Hill - It is so surprising that Hill is still in the league after all the injuries over the years, which kept him from being widely considered one of the greatest players of all-time. I do consider him one of the greatest of all time and I know he is one of the greatest players on the Suns, even at age 38! He is so far averaging 11.3 pts and 5.3 rebs per game in 29.7 minutes of action.
Marcus Camby
16 of 18
#3 - Starter - Marcus Camby - Portland Trailblazers - Camby has long been one of the best rebounders and defenders in the league. He outlasted many, many other players and is still dominating defensively at age 36. He is averaging 8.8 points, 10 boards and 1.8 blocks in only 29.3 minutes per game so far this season!
Steve Nash
17 of 18
#2 - Starter - Steve Nash - Phoenix Suns - Still the Suns main man at age 36. He is not passing as much so far this year (6.7 assists per game) but he is scoring at a great shooting clip of 50% for 17.3 ppg this year. Nash is keeping the Suns together.
Jason Kidd
18 of 18
#1 - Starter - Jason Kidd - Dallas Mavericks - He has laughed in the face of father time and seems like a guy who is 27 not 37. This guy has been around forever and he has forever been a game changer and extremely awesome passer. He can even shoot the three now.
He is so far second in the NBA in assists per game with 11.7 assists. He is also scoring 11.3 points per night. Additionally, the do everything for Dallas guy is averaging 2.3 steals and 5.7 rebounds per game. Jason Kidd is sick!!! and the best old man in the league.
