College Football Rankings Week 10: Who Is Overrated in Coaches and AP Polls?
College football rankings are out, the coaches and the AP have released their polls.
And just like last week, the Oregon Ducks sit at the top of both polls. With the Ducks earning their eighth straight win of the season on Sunday, it's hard to picture someone else at the top of the rankings.
But with Auburn also on a roll, it's hard not to think of the Tigers as the most deserving No. 1 team in college football this year.
That said, it's time to look at the polls and figure out who doesn't deserve to be ranked as high as they are.
Who's overrated? Let's find out. Here we go.
10. Oklahoma State Cowboys
1 of 10
The Cowboys are ranked No. 18 on the coaches' poll this week and are just overrated at that spot because they already ranked No. 17 on the Week 7 polls.
Two weeks later, after one big loss to top-ranked Nebraska and a win against an unranked Kansas State, the poll already has them back at No. 18.
That just cannot be right. Surely this team is getting overhyped among coaches because of their high-powered offense, which scores an average of 45.3 points per game.
9. Florida State Seminoles
2 of 10
The 'Noles are overrated simply because they still sit atop the North Carolina State Wolfpack on the coaches' polls.
The Wolfpack just gave them a big loss on Saturday, 28-24. It just does not make sense that Florida State still ranks at No. 24 on the polls with North Carolina State at No. 25.
AP pollsters got this one right by putting NC State above FSU in their rankings.
8. Missouri Tigers
3 of 10
There's been a lot of hype surrounding the Tigers since they started the season on a roll with seven straight wins.
But this weekend, they were convincingly defeated by the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 31-17.
They may have upset a BCS No. 1 ranked team in the Oklahoma Sooners, but the 'Huskers ran all over their defense, led by Ray Helu, Jr.—exposing their inability to defend the run.
That makes Mizzou 1-1 against top-ranked teams, but they are still ranked over the Michigan State Spartans who, like the Tigers, streaked into Week 9 undefeated.
But the Spartans, have arguably had a tougher time because they earned wins against top-ranked Wisconsin and Michigan on their way to an 8-0 record.
They may have lost to a very good defensive Iowa team, but Mizz should not be ranked ahead of this 8-1 Michigan State team on both polls.
7. Oklahoma Sooners
4 of 10
Oklahoma should not be ranked ahead of Nebraska in the coaches' polls.
Both teams have one loss this season, and the Sooners were ranked No. 1 on the BCS just over a week ago. But the fact is, Nebraska has looked a lot better than Oklahoma all season—with all of their wins coming in double digits and in a more decisive fashion.
The Sooners have been fortunate enough to escape near losses in games against Air Force, Cincinnati and even Texas.
This week Nebraska disposed of the same Mizz team that upset Oklahoma last week.
The press got this ranking right by putting Nebraska above Oklahoma in their polls.
6. LSU Tigers
5 of 10
The Tigers sat out this week with a bye but somehow jumped up one spot in the coaches' poll this week from No. 12 to No. 11 this week.
While they took the week off, two Pac-10 teams—Stanford and Arizona—each earned another win this week to make their records 7-1 this season—identical to LSU.
It may have made sense a week ago to put LSU above 6-1 teams on the polls, but now that those teams have caught up in the win column, they have a rightful claim to passing them in the polls.
Arizona, who is below them in the polls, has earned a major win against top-ranked Iowa earlier in the season, while the other top-ranked teams that LSU defeated have fallen out of the rankings.
LSU should not be ranked above Stanford or Arizona in the coaches' polls.
5. Arkansas Razorbacks
6 of 10
The Razorbacks are overrated because they sit above the Gamecocks on the AP polls.
Arkansas has lost to both top-ranked teams that they have played this season—Alabama and Auburn.
While South Carolina has taken down top-ranked Alabama and lost to Auburn. Even though they also lost against SEC rival Kentucky, that's not enough of a reason to keep the Hogs ranked above them in the polls.
The coaches got this one right by putting South Carolina over Arkansas.
4. Boise State Broncos
7 of 10
The Broncos played on Tuesday of this week and the truth was evident with all that attention; they didn't really impress that much. Louisiana Tech was within two scores late into the third quarter.
On the AP poll, they still rank above Auburn. Boise is a good football team but has not been tested as much as Auburn this year.
Boise State is overrated because they still rank above the Tigers.
Boise has wins against Virginia Tech and Oregon State who have been in-and-out of the Top 25 rankings. Meanwhile, Auburn has already beaten top-ranked SEC foes Arkansas, South Carolin and LSU.
3. Utah Utes
8 of 10
Utah showed a kink in their armor this weekend by allowing the Air Force to stay close and make a run at the win near the end of the game.
They did manage to hold on however, getting big plays from their defense. But this just proves the argument that, if the Utes played in a tougher conference, they would have likely already lost some games this season.
Wisconsin has a claim to be ranked above Utah simply because they've faced more challenging opponents this year, with their only loss of the season coming against a very good upstart Michigan State Spartans squad.
2. Ohio State Buckeyes
9 of 10
Ohio State is overrated because they always get a lot of love and attention from the media and the coaches.
Considering they have only played two top ranked teams all season—Miami (Fl.), which has fallen out of the Top 25 and Wisconsin, who they lost to, 31-18—they really should not be ranked at No. 8 on both polls.
Both Nebraska and Oklahoma have a claim to ranked above the Buckeyes because they have been able to play against and have defeated much tougher competition this season.
1. Oregon Ducks
10 of 10
Oregon didn't fall this week and neither did Auburn, and for the first time in four weeks, a No. 1 ranked team didn't lose.
Both teams kept on going with their success and remain undefeated.
However, Oregon just doesn't appear to be deserving of their No. 1 ranking on both of the polls.
Auburn has a better claim to the No. 1 spot. Oregon has only played one top-ranked team in their schedule, defeating conference rivals Stanford Cardinal. While Auburn has racked up three wins against top-ranked SEC opponents South Carolina, Arkansas and LSU.
This makes Oregon overrated. Until they show they can beat other top-ranked opponents, they shouldn't be ranked No. 1.
