As of now the Oregon Ducks and the Auburn Tigers are arguably the two best teams in the country. However there has been some debate on which team is actually better.
The AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll both believe that the Oregon Ducks should own the top spot in the country, but the BCS standings have the Ducks at No. 2 right behind the Auburn Tigers in the top spot.
With conflicts in the polls, it’s time to dissect these teams to see who the best is.
It is difficult to compare two teams that do not meet on the field because outside factors play a role. For example, the schedule is always a point of argument. The SEC, in my opinion, is the tougher place to play and therefore the tougher schedule would go to Auburn.
Auburn can also boast the best player in the country in quarterback Cameron Newton. With all due respect to Oregon running back LaMichael James, Newton is the Heisman front-runner. Newton has rushed and passed for a combined 3,200 yards and 30 touchdowns on the season.
Auburn has the best player in the country and the toughest schedule, but that may not necessarily make them the best team in the country.
The next step is to look at the numbers, an argument that could still be attributed to the schedule, however there is no denying the greatness of the Oregon Ducks offense. They are explosive and average a play every 22 seconds, keeping their opposition on their heels. They rank No. 1 in the country in yards, yards per game, points and points per game. Auburn does not hold the top spot in any offensive category.
On defense, neither team shines, but the Ducks do rank tied for third in the country in interceptions. Auburn ranks 11th in the SEC just ahead of South Carolina in pass defense.
While both teams are not glamorous on defense the edge is to the Ducks.
A look at the latest college football odds as posted by online sportsbook BetMania, show that Oregon is the favorite to win the BCS championship. Oregon is listed at three to one to win the BCS, and Auburn is listed at 10 to one to bring home the national championship.
The truth of the matter is that this debate may be premature as these teams still have significant hurdles to remain unbeaten on the season.
Oregon still has to play against a ranked Arizona team and end the season against Oregon St. in the Civil War.
Auburn still has a classic battle slated at Alabama on November 26th, which is shaping up to be one of the better games of the year.
One thing that is certain is that if both of these teams play for the BCS championship it will be one of the most exciting games in football.
