Fantasy Football Week 8: 10 QBs To Replace Tony Romo on Your Team
Tony Romo has officially been diagnosed with a fractured left clavicle, and could possibly miss the rest of the season.
Not only does this throw the Dallas Cowboys for a loop, but many of you fantasy owners are probably scratching your heads now wondering what to do without your star quarterback.
Fear not, though. There are players out there who are ready to perform for your team.
Here are 10 players willing and ready to replace Tony Romo on your fantasy team.
10. Philip Rivers
1 of 11
While the San Diego Chargers may not be doing so well, Philip Rivers is on fire this season, leading the best passing offense in the League, and all without Vincent Jackson.
Rivers struggled a bit against New England last week, but he should have Malcom Floyd back in the wide receiver rotation, and should have a healthier Antonio Gates at his disposal.
If you can get him, get him. Rivers is going to be putting up big fantasy numbers for the rest of the season, I can guarantee it.
9. Matt Cassel
2 of 11
While the Chiefs are still undoubtedly a run first offense, Matt Cassel sure has done his fair share of dominating over the past two weeks.
In two games, Cassel has completed 70 percent of his passes for 394 yards and five touchdowns with zero turnovers.
With the recent performances of Matt Cassel, it's possible that the Chiefs begin to put the ball in his hands more often, and that could mean good things on the fantasy end if he lives up to the reputation he has built in his last two games.
8. Jon Kitna
3 of 11
No, this is not a mistake.
No, I am not crazy.
Kitna has the potential to perform just as well as Tony Romo did in Dallas.
Now that he has a lot of talent around him, and likely won't spend most of the game on the run or on the ground, Kitna should be able to post good numbers.
Consider this as the best evidence for him that I can give: During his 2006-2008 stretch with the Detroit Lions, Kitna was sacked 129 times (totalling roughly 3.5 sacks per game). Here are his stats:
- 5,034 yards
- 44 touchdowns
- 60.8% completion rating
- 47 interceptions
- 16 lost fumbles
Again, consider all this in the context of the 2006-2008 Detroit Lions: No talent (aside from Calvin Johnson in the later years), no hope, and no protection for the quarterback. To put up those numbers in 36 games with pressure constantly down your back is simply impressive.
7. Josh Freeman
4 of 11
The Buccaneers have something here in QB Josh Freeman. Now that he is really starting to come into his own as a player and a leader, he is really helping Tampa Bay put together a respectable season.
That doesn't quite matter to you all, though. What matters are the numbers, and the numbers don't lie.
So how about this: 1,255 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Not bad for Josh Freeman, and he should only get better over the next few weeks, as they face three of the worst teams in the NFL. Freeman won't put up massive points, but he'll keep you in games.
6. Ryan Fitzpatrick
5 of 11
To quote Star Wars, "Search your feelings. You know it to be true."
Since taking over for Trent Edwards in Week 3, Fitzpatrick has 11 touchdowns to four interceptions, and 969 yards.
This is all from four games people.
The best part, though, has to be the fact that his best game came against the Baltimore Ravens, previously the best defense in the League, this past Sunday.
It's time to jump on the Fitzpatrick bandwagon, because this guy is going places.
5. Jay Cutler
6 of 11
The way his offensive line is playing, it may be difficult for Jay Cutler to stay healthy for the whole season. However, if he does, he has the potential to put up huge numbers.
Cutler has only passed for seven touchdowns, and Chicago has the bye next week, but the rest of the season is full of slack pass defenses for the Bears, and Cutler could easily exploit that.
The success of Cutler hangs on a few things, so it would be a gamble, but the potential return is high.
4. Kyle Orton
7 of 11
Like Philip Rivers, Orton may be very hard to get ahold of.
That having been said, if you can, grab him immediately.
The Broncos don't take kindly to thrashings, and next week they match up against the San Francisco 49ers, where they will likely be looking to take out their pent up frustration from their blowout loss to Oakland last week.
It also helps that the Broncos are more or less a pass only team, so Orton is sure to get a lot of touches and post some big numbers.
3. Tarvaris Jackson
8 of 11
This one is a real risk pick, but has the potential to be big.
With Brett Favre likely coming out due to two fractures in his surgically repaired ankle, Tarvaris Jackson may finally get the start in Minnesota.
Do not be fooled by where the Vikings passing game is now, Jackson has the potential to do a lot with his starting time.
Over the next three weeks, Jackson will face New England, Arizona, and Chicago, three considerably bad defenses.
Big numbers could be in Jackson's future. Picking him up could be a very wise decision.
2. Sam Bradford
9 of 11
If you haven't already bought into this kid, now is certainly time.
Bradford is playing very, very well, posting big numbers against very good defenses like San Diego.
The Rams have a few tough games ahead of them, but, for the most part, they play very weak defenses, and Sam Bradford has the potential to really run things up against some of these teams.
Bradford could be a real difference maker on you fantasy team, that's a guarantee.
1. Matthew Stafford
10 of 11
After spending a long time on the sideline nursing a shoulder injury, Matt Stafford is set to make his return to the field this Sunday against the Washington Redskins.
Am I the only one who finds it ironic that two Lions (one former, one current) are reentering the starting lineups this week?
In any case, the Lions were performing very well in the passing game without Stafford (they are currently 7th in the League in passing offense), and should continue to hold up or raise that standard with their starter back in.
