NFL Week 7 Picks: St. Louis Rams and 4 Other Underdogs that Will Win Sunday
The NFL is often billed as a league of parity-filled teams. This year is no different, especially in the NFC where one team can look great one week and completely fall flat the next (Atlanta Falcons).
With every game being so unpredictable it has led to a number of upsets thus far. This week will be no different with a slate of evenly matched teams facing off. It should mean a good week of close hard-fought football games.
Without further ado, here are five games where the underdog will be walking off the field winners.
Washington Redskins
1 of 5
The Redskins are a solid team across the board. They aren't flashy in any area and don't possess any explosive offensive weapons in the receiving or running game. The team that will be opposing them this week will be the Chicago Bears.
Jay Cutler and Mike Martz were supposed to be a dynamic duo, but results have been mixed early on. Losing to Seattle at home is unacceptable for a team that expects to make the playoffs.
Chicago's offensive line isn't protecting Cutler right now and the Bears running game is inconsistent.
This has the makings of a close game that could come down to a field goal. Donovan McNabb will get the 'Skins back into the win column while sending Bears fans home disgruntled.
Carolina Panthers
2 of 5
Matt Moore is back behind center as he is set to make his third start of the season against the San Francisco 49ers. The Panthers are 0-5 and possess the league's worst offense statistically. Talent-wise Carolina has the weapons to put points on the board with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart in the backfield.
Steve Smith will return to action after missing one game to a high ankle sprain, which will certainly help Moore and the passing game.
The 49ers beat Oakland to get their first win of the season but it wasn't pretty. Alex Smith struggled to get the offense going throughout the first half and a large reason they won was because the Raiders were so pathetic with the ball.
Going across the country to play an early game against a team coming off of a bye doesn't bode well for the Niners.
Carolina will get the victory over the enigmatic 49ers.
Philadelphia Eagles
3 of 5
The Eagles clobbered the Falcons a week ago behind Kevin Kolb's outstanding play. With Michael Vick nursing sore ribs Kolb has shown that he can get the job done. Vick is close to being healthy and it's plausible that he will be ready to go next week.
That means Kolb has one last chance to either win the job or blow it. Going up against a formidable Tennessee Titan team will be a tough challenge, but a challenge that the Eagles should rise to.
Vince Young's status is up in the air, although with Kerry Collins backing him up it may not be that big of a difference. What does make a difference is that the Titans are coming off a short week after playing on Monday night.
DeSean Jackson will be missed after suffering a concussion but Jeremy Maclin is more than capable of filling in his shoes.
Philadelphia will come up with a big win to improve to 4-0 on the road.
Arizona Cardinals
4 of 5
In a battle of the top two teams in the NFC West the Cardinals will look to take sole-possession of first place with a win over the Seahawks. With undrafted rookie Max Hall under center the 'Cards were able to upset the New Orleans Saints two weeks ago.
Does the rook have any magic left in the tank or is he a one-start wonder?
I'm buying Hall and this Arizona team. Even though they are without Kurt Warner this season this is still a team that's been to the postseason two years in a row.
On the other hand it's been awhile since Seattle has been to the playoffs and Pete Carroll would love to change that this season.
While I'm taking Arizona to pull of the upset this division race is far from over.
St. Louis Rams
5 of 5
Sam Bradford has lived up to the hype through six games and with a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the Rams will improve to 4-3 on the season. Nobody expected St. Louis to compete in the NFC West but the division is wide-open with the 49ers crumbling and no other team appearing talented enough to run away with it.
Tampa Bay started the season off 3-1 which proved to be a mirage after being spanked by the Saints last weekend. Josh Freeman and the 'Bucs still have a ways to go before they'll be able to compete with top-level competition.
Although the Rams aren't exactly the cream of the crop they have Steven Jackson in the backfield to lean on something Tampa Bay doesn't have. Neither team possesses great receivers meaning this game will come down to who can run the ball.
In what should be another close game the Rams will pull it out behind Bradford's arm and Jackson's legs.
