NFL Picks Week 7: 5 Teams Ready to Climb Out of the Cellar

Laura FalconOct 22, 2010

Despite their slow starts in the 2010 NFL season, there are some teams who are ready to snap their losing ways and turn the losses into wins.

Who will they be?

Will these teams surprise us all with an upset? Or will it be a hard-fought, back-and-forth battle?

Or will they completely blow someone out of the park?

Following are five teams who stand a good chance of bouncing out of their losing slumps in the upcoming games of Week 7.

Standings: 1-5

Week 7 opponent: Carolina Panthers

Getting out of the cellar: The San Francisco 49ers started their season 0-5 but managed to get their first win against the Oakland Raiders. This might be just what the team needs to get out of the losing column.

It also helps that the Panthers have yet to see a win in the season.

The 49ers have a solid defense in comparison to the rest of their division, which they should use to their advantage, but in order for the defense to get some credit, quarterback Alex Smith needs to do a better job. If they can run the ball a little better than they have been, then they should be able to beat a very bad Panthers team.

If not, Mike Singletary might find himself out of a job.

Dallas Cowboys

Standings: 1-4

Week 7 opponent: New York Giants

Getting out of the cellar: The best defense in the NFC vs. a very struggling defense.

This will be a big week for the Cowboys, who are looking to avoid registering their worst start in 21 years by beating the Giants. With how well the Giants have been playing, especially defensively, this could pose a problem for the Cowboys. However, the Cowboys are better than how they've been playing.

Quarterback Tony Romo has been prone to some mistakes when the opposing defense puts on the pressure, so he will have to be much better in order to put some points up against the Giants.

Playing at home could prove to be a big help for the Cowboys.

Denver Broncos

Standings: 2-4

Week 7 opponent: Oakland Raiders

Getting out of the cellar: Oakland is experiencing plenty of quarterback issues, so the Broncos can certainly do some damage if they can capitalize on that.

The Broncos have something to be proud of last week despite losing to the solid New York Jets on a late touchdown. This is a week for the Broncos to prove themselves by building on their solid play last week despite the defensive breakdown. It's also important to note that the Broncos have faced some of the tougher teams in the NFL this season.

Aside from the fact that the Broncos will be fired up for this game, the Broncos should pull out a win because there is a good possibility that third-string quarterback Kyle Boller will have to play for the Raiders. In the end, the problems in Oakland might prove to be too much for the team.

Standings: 2-4

Week 7 opponent: New England Patriots

Getting out of the cellar: The Chargers, heavily favored to win the AFC West, have started the season on a very surprising foot, dropping early games against teams that had a clear disadvantage against them.

They weren't favored to win the AFC West for nothing. With the daunting Patriots coming to town, the Chargers are going to have to play like their season depends on it (because, to an extent, it really does).

Their recent mistakes have been sloppy play, and that won't work against the Patriots, who can find a way to win against just about anyone.

A big opponent that will require solid play might be necessary for the Chargers to get out of their slump and play like everyone was expecting them to play.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Standings: 3-3

Week 7 opponent: Kansas City Chiefs

Getting out of the cellar: So I'll admit, I don't think the Jaguars are going to be able to pull one out of this game, but it certainly isn't a lost cause.

The Chiefs have a strong, young team that will be punishing the Jaguars all 60 minutes on both offense and defense. With the Jaguars possibly starting Todd Bouman in his first start since 2005, the Chiefs will have a good opportunity to use their speedy defense to force some turnovers.

Something is certainly up with the Jaguars, so they need to stick to what they're good at: running the ball. If they can dictate play early on in the game, then all won't be lost for the Jaguars.
