Fantasy Football Week 7 Rankings: Running Backs

Bruno Boys Fantasy FootballOct 20, 2010

Six weeks are in the books now, and Arian Foster, Chris Johnson and LeSean McCoy stand as the three highest-scoring running backs in fantasy football right now.

One of them was expected to be there, one is a mild surprise and one could be classified as a bit of a shocker.

Foster has established himself as one of the best backs in fantasy, and if you managed to take him late and pair him with another top back, chances are you’re in first place right now.

There are some struggling backs that still have time to redeem themselves, as well as some new names that are starting to make an impact.

Our Fantasy Football Week 7 Running Back Rankings will give you an idea of some running backs to target this week.

1. Adrian Peterson (Minnesota Vikings) @ Green Bay

Peterson didn’t look amazing Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, but a final line of 73 yards and a touchdown is good enough for fantasy purposes. He was held to barely over three yards per carry in the game, which was over a yard less than backs had been averaging against the Cowboys this season, so that does have to concern you a bit.

While Peterson has managed double-digit fantasy point totals in every game so far this season, most of his production came in two games against the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions. In those two games, Peterson totaled 55 points...in the three other games he totaled just 33 points.

While his numbers have been good overall, we’d like to see another monster game to put us at ease just a tad. AD gets a depleted Green Bay Packers team that watched the Dolphins run for 150 yards against them last week...this could be the monster game we’re hoping for.

Point Projection: 24 points

2. Steven Jackson (St. Louis Rams) @ Tampa Bay

Jackson had 109 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries in the Rams' shocking Week 6 upset of the San Diego Chargers.

Despite his team's inconsistent play this season, as well as constant nagging injuries, Jackson has been remarkably consistent this season. He’s averaging 4.0 YPC and has 507 yards in six games with two touchdowns. The low scoring rate is still a concern with SJax, but if you’re looking for someone who can do a lot with a little, then look no further.

Jackson will look to have another big game and will have a good chance to do so in Week 7 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs are allowing a league-worst 5.3 YPC to go along with a 157 YPG average that is second worst to the Buffalo Bills. Jackson looks like he could be in for a big week, and if the Rams can continue rolling after a big win and move the ball consistently, maybe he could have his first two-score game of the year.

Point Projection: 22 points

3. Chris Johnson (Tennessee Titans) vs. Philadelphia

Johnson had another good game in Week 6, running for 111 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. His big touchdown run came late with the game already out of hand, so without the run we’re looking at a pretty mediocre day from CJ. Still, the bottom line is that he did break off that run and had 19 fantasy points, so all in all it was a good day.

Johnson gets a tougher matchup in Week 7 with the Philadelphia Eagles, a team that held Michael Turner to just 45 yards on 15 carries last week. Aside from that game, the Eagles have been nothing more than mediocre against the run, so we’ll have to see what Johnson can do.

Johnson is coming off two straight big weeks and is looking good on the ground, so the smart money’s on CJ putting up his third big week in a row.

Point Projection: 21 points
