Oklahoma vs. Missouri: Tigers Will Stun Sooners

James BrownOct 19, 2010

For the last two weeks, the No. 1-ranked college football team in the country has lost. This week it will happen again, but it won’t be the team that you think it is.

In the AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Poll, the Oregon Ducks hold the top spot, and they will not lose to the UCLA Bruins.

In the latest edition of the BCS Standings, the Oklahoma Sooners have the No. 1 ranking, and they are on upset alert when they play against the Missouri Tigers this week.

The opening college football odds posted on this game by BetMania has the Sooners as slim three-point favorites over the Tigers Saturday night at Faurot Field/Memorial Stadium, in a nationally-televised ABC game which will kick off at 7 p.m. While this may seem like a mismatch to most, the Tigers are legit contenders in the Big 12.

The Tigers were ranked 11th in the BCS Standings, and they are 6-0 overall as the sit atop the Big 12 North Division. They are led on offense by quarterback Blaine Gabbert who is accurate and deadly as the Tigers signal-caller.

In the 30-9 victory on the road at Texas A&M, Gabbert displayed his pinpoint accuracy by going 31-of-47 passing for 361 yards and three touchdowns. The Tigers offense is complemented by the aggressive play on defense.

In the game against the Aggies, the Tigers tallied seven sacks, and now rank fourth in the nation in bringing down the opposing quarterback and average over three sacks per game.

OU red shirt sophomore quarterback Landry Jones will spend most of the evening running for his life.

But sacks aren't the only thing the defense does well, as Mizzou’s enhanced defense leads the Big 12 Conference, and ranks second in the nation in scoring defense.

The defense is allowing an average of just 10.83 points per game which is good for second in the nation behind TCU. The defense will be up for the challenge against Oklahoma in what should be one of the better games of the season.

As if the Tiger fans did not have enough reason to be excited about this meeting, they just got two more. It’s homecoming week at ol’ Mizzou, and it was announced that the ESPN "College GameDay" show will be held on the Mizzou campus for the first time ever.

The Sooners are 1-4-1 against the spread (ATS) in their last six road games against a team with a winning home record and 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a win.

The Sooners are 0-5-1 ATS in their last six games following a win of more than 20 points and 1-4 ATS in their last five games as a road favorite.

The Tigers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a win and won’t need the points in this game as they pull the upset and knock off the No. 1-ranked team in the BCS Standings.
