NFL Trade Rumors: Will the Green Bay Packers Get a Running Back?

Patrick ClarkeOct 19, 2010

After six weeks and countless injuries, the Green Bay Packers (3-3) are struggling to stay relevant in the NFC playoff race.

Perhaps no injury was more costly than the one suffered by running back Ryan Grant in Week 1.

Since then, the Packers have relied heavily on Aaron Rodgers and the passing game to move the ball.  When they have run the ball, they've seen little success with backup Brandon Jackson and fullback John Kuhn.

So the question is, can the Packers snag a running back before Tuesday's 4 pm trade deadline?

While there have been a few names tossed around recently, like Dallas Cowboys back Marion Barber and the Baltimore Ravens' Willis McGahee, it's likely that many of the Packers' problems running the ball aren't even related to their running back situation.

Green Bay's offensive line hasn't exactly been stellar so far this season—Rodgers has been sacked 14 times. Last year, their running game never truly got going at any point, either.

The Packers coaching staff is also to blame for their rushing difficulties this year. Green Bay has only run the ball 134 times in six games, and 23 of those attempts were by Aaron Rodgers (17 percent of rushes).

Though no running back for the Packers has a better average than Grant (5.6, 45 yards on 8 carries), Jackson and Kuhn both average more than four yards per carry (4.6 and 4.2, respectively).

One would most likely have to look at the the play-calling in a situation like this.

Nonetheless, the Packers are in need of a big name to rejuvenate a squad plagued with injuries.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Dallas has had no talks with the Packers regarding Barber. Another ESPN source says Ravens head coach John Harbaugh denied reports that Baltimore is shopping Willis McGahee on Monday.

With the trade deadline just hours away, it would seem as if the Green Bay Packers will be moving forward with the running backs already on their roster.

Undoubtedly, the key for the Packers will be getting healthy and surviving the next few weeks in a very winnable NFC North division, whether they do it with the running game or not.
