NFL Trade Rumors: 5 Buyers and Sellers at the Deadline

Chris EggemeyerOct 19, 2010

Today is one of those great days around the League where the hype machine is cranking on on cylinders: Today is the official trade deadline.

There is no doubt that several players will be playing in new colors by the end of the day, considering that several teams need the talent or the draft considerations badly.

Some are ravaged by injury, some are trying to rebuild, and some just need that final piece. In any case, though, here are five buyers and sellers who should be making roster moves by the end of the day.

Buyer: Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers lost Jermichael Finley for the season on Monday, which marks another major injury to a Packers team that has been all but demolished by injury.

With players like Finley and linebacker Nick Barnett done for the season, in addition to players like Clay Matthews still on the bench due to injury, Green Bay is quickly losing its grip and could be headed for an early vacation in January if they cannot put things together.

The Packers could add players at a few positions, but here are the two most likely:

Cornerback

  • Donald Strickland: Strickland was picked up by the San Diego Chargers this offseason out of free agency from the New York Jets. He is currently their primary nickel cornerback. He is a great player who, in some circumstances, could make a play for the starting role. The Packers would have to give up a mid-round (most likely fourth) round pick for him, but, considering the state of their left side cornerbacks, the Packers could really use him.
  • Karl Paymah: The Houston Texans may be going through some turmoil, but they are clearly a team that has been looking to improve the defensive back situations, and they could use any draft considerations they can get. Paymah is a stop-gap kind of player, but, since he is buried on the Texans depth chart, he could be relatively easy to pick up (a sixth rounder might be reasonable).

Linebacker

  • Akin Ayodele: It's hard to think that the Buffalo Bills would part with Ayodele after picking him up this past offseason, but Ayodele doesn't have much time left in the league, he hasn't played much, and the Bills need everything they can get in the next few drafts. With Nick Barnett out, this would be a smart play by the Packers.

Seller: Buffalo Bills

The Bills are in serious need of draft leverage as they attempt to rebuild their team from the ground up. They don't have much to work with, but they could definitely move a few players by today's deadline:

  1. Akin Ayodele: As mentioned in the previous slide, Akin Ayodele could be a reasonable pickup for the Green Bay Packers. However, the same could be said for any team looking to add security at inside linebacker. Ayodele would likely only garner low round compensation, but it would be a step in the right direction for the Bills.
  2. Roscoe Parrish: Believe it or not, Parrish is a movable asset for the Buffalo Bills. They seem very content with the stable of wide receivers that they have, especially with some of the younger guys, which makes this move logical. Parrish isn't old by any means, but he is certainly at the top of his career right now, and could earn the Bills a mid round selection. There are teams that need him, too. Seattle, Cleveland, and Minnesota could all benefit heavily from a player like Parrish

Buyer: Oakland Raiders

SAN FRANCISCO - OCTOBER 17: Jason Campbell #8 of the Oakland Raiders passes the ball against the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park on October 17, 2010 in San Francisco, California. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

The Oakland Raiders had a kind of spark for some part of this season, but it is starting to fade fast, mostly because of injury and inconsistent play.

With Jason Campbell and Bruce Gradkowski both potentially on the bench for the Raiders next game, Oakland is considering starting Kyle Boller, which may not end well for them.

Al Davis likes to trade for big ticket players, so there are definitely players out there that he will be looking at today. Here are a few big ones:

  1. Albert Haynesworth: Despite the insistence on the part of the Redskins that Haynesworth will not move, it still seems like a lot of double speak. A move to the Raiders would allow Haynesworth back into the 4-3 defensive tackle role that he clearly misses, and it would do wonders for the Raiders run defense (providing Haynesworth can stay healthy). The compensation might be heavy, with a second, or possibly even a first round price tag likely. It doesn't mean Al Davis won't take that chance, though (see the Richard Seymour trade).
  2. Brandon Jacobs: Someone will make a move on Jacobs, and the Raiders seem like the best match. Oakland is dealing with a nagging injury to starting running back Darren McFadden, and they could use the extra help. Jacobs' value is dropping every day, so the Raiders could find themselves a steal here, giving up only a mid to low round pick,

Seller: Cincinnati Bengals

It may be hard to believe, but the Bengals could chose to go for some Bill Belichick-esque wheeling and dealing today with Terrell Owens.

The Bengals have a stacked group of receivers, boasting Chad Ochocinco, Jordan Shipley, Andre Caldwell, and Jermaine Gresham (among others), and they could afford to drop T.O.

Owens may be the Bengals' leading receiver, but his compensation value is likely worth shipping him away.

Considering the excellent season that Owens is having right now, a desperate team could be very willing to give up a second round pick for the aging receiver.

Buyer: Arizona Cardinals

GLENDALE, AZ - OCTOBER 10: Quarterback Max Hall #6 of the Arizona Cardinals during the NFL game against the New Orleans Saints at the University of Phoenix Stadium on October 10, 2010 in Glendale, Arizona. The Cardinals defeated the Saints 30-20. (Photo

The Arizona Cardinals seem about ready to start preparing for next season, but that's not to say that they won't go quietly into the night.

Their is some good talent available to the Cardinals right now, and they could very easily make a move on a couple of players:

  1. Jason Campbell: The Raiders have done stranger things in the last few years under Al Davis, and the Cardinals could really use a player who could play in front of Max Hall until he's ready, or, in the worst case scenario, act as a stop gap until Arizona can draft a quality quarterback. Jason Campbell is better than his performance in Oakland would indicate. He would certainly benefit from having receivers like Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston. Compensation would likely be a third round pick (plus another low round pick), but it could be well worth it.
  2. Jasper Brinkley: While the Vikings certainly like Brinkley, they could be convinced to part with the linebacker for the proper compensation. Brinkley could challenge Paris Lenon for one of the starting inside linebacker spots immediately, and could make a long term impact on the team. Compensation would likely be a second or third round pick plus another conditional pick.

Seller: Washington Redskins

This one is practically a no-brainer.

The Redskins are trying to rebuild fast under Mike Shanahan, and part of that process has to be shedding the unnecessary weight from Jim Zorn's regime.

This brings us to Albert Haynesworth.

Haynesworth will be out the door at some point, whether that be today or after the season is up, that much is for sure. The question will be whether or not the Redskins can get the kind of compensation they want for Haynesworth. I can only see one team that would give him a serious look:

The Oakland Raiders.

Al Davis is known for bringing on aging or problematic talent for high draft compensation. Haynesworth would make perfect sense.

On a more logical side, though, Haynesworth would fit right in next to Richard Seymour. He would put the finishing touches on a Raiders defensive line that, from a talent standpoint, would be one of the best in the League.

Buyer: Kansas City Chiefs

The only thing keeping the Chiefs from running away with the AFC West title is their passing game. They are currently ranked a miserable 27th in the League in passing yards per game.

While some of this is the fault of Matt Cassel, some of the blame can certainly fall on the shoulders of the lack of true standout receivers. Dwayne Bowe is good, but his hands are inconsistent, and that fact alone is costing the Chiefs valuable points.

There are a couple of players that the Chiefs could go for:

  1. Devin Aromashodu: While prying Aromashodu away from the Bears might be a little difficult, he could really help the Chiefs with an added outside play maker. He has the ability to play well, he just needs the opportunity. Compensation would likely be a mid-round pick. The Chiefs could also compensate with a simple receiver-for-receiver trade.
  2. Max Komar: It's crazy to think that the Chiefs would make a play for an undrafted rookie free agent, but Max Komar has really been playing well this year, and he is unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), buried on the Cardinals depth chart. Arizona could use the draft compensation, and Komar would make an excellent slot threat for Kansas City. Compensation would likely be a mid to low round pick.

Seller: San Diego Chargers

So much drama has surrounded Vincent Jackson for the last couple of months that he may be challenging Brett Favre for most talked about player.

Despite the fact that Vincent Jackson has yet to sign his tender, he has been ordered to do so by the NFLPA by October 31st, and he may choose to do so earlier if the Chargers have an offer that they are willing to take.

San Diego has already shut down a few attempts by other teams to pick up the embattled wide receiver, but this will be their last opportunity to get something for a player that will almost definitely not be back in San Diego next year.

There are teams that really need Jackson. Minnesota, Washington, Cleveland and Buffalo have all expressed interest at some point this year, and all four of them are still very much in the hunt for the player.

The final decision will come down to the ego of Chargers GM AJ Smith. Smith may choose not to budge, but the smart play would be to deal Jackson for whatever compensation is possible, which would likely be a second rounder with an additional compensatory pick.

Buyer: Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns have been showing signs of life this season, and they are definitely on the right way towards having a good team once again.

While the Browns may appear to be more interested in selling than buying, don't doubt that the Browns have their eye on some young talent that they would like to bring in as a part of their rebuilding plan.

Here are a few players that could be taking their talents to Cleveland today:

  1. Max Komar: With Josh Cribbs lost to injury, the Browns could use a good No. 3 wide receiver to rotate with Chancey Stuckey. Max Komar would make a great slot receiver for the Browns, and could really round out this stable of receivers. Compensation would likely be a mid round selection.
  2. Tyronne Green: The backup guard from the San Diego Chargers could really help the Browns injury-ravaged offensive line. He would also have a shot at becoming a starter some day. Compensation would likely be low, perhaps a third or fourth rounder at the most.

Seller: New England Patriots

Never underestimate Bill Belichick.

It is clear that he is always ready to trade some players, and could very well consider moving one or more before the trade deadline.

Belichick has a habit of getting rid of aging talent, so, as odd as it might seem, Tully Banta-Cain could see his time in New England come to a close as the team looks to get even younger. Banta-Cain could likely garner another mid-round pick for the New England Patriots.

Also, don't be surprised if the Patriots try to move wide receiver Matt Slater. Slater is a good future prospect, but the Patriots are so loaded with great receiving threats hat Slater is practically obsolete. He could easily pull in a mid or low round pick from a team in need of wide receivers.
