ACC Football Power Poll Week 7: Virginia Tech Starting To Roll
Previous Rankings at All About Sports
1) Florida State Seminoles 6-1 (4-0) Last Week - 1
After their emotional win at Miami, the Noles came out flat against a mediocre Boston College team. It was a struggle but Florida State won 24-19 over BC. Every team throws dud or two in a season and the Seminoles got away with one this weekend.
They can't play like that on the 28th October when they head to NC State on Thursday night. FSU is still the team to beat in the Atlantic.
2) Virginia Tech Hokies 5-2 (3-0) Last Week - 2
Do you think the Hokies would like back the first 2 weeks of the season? This is the Virginia Tech team we all expected. The Hokies had 605 yards of offense and 49 first half points. Yes I would say they are not the same team that started the year.
With Duke upcoming, the Hokies should again have another stat padding game.
3) Miami Hurricanes 4-2 (2-1) Last Week - 3
I wouldn't put too much stock into Hurricanes lackluster 28-13 win at Duke. Miami still had a hangover from the Florida State loss.
They better strap it on Saturday because a depleted but confident North Carolina team heads to Miami. The winner is in solid position to make a run in the ACC Coastal, the loser will need plenty of help.
4) North Carolina Tar Heels 4-2 (2-1) Last Week - 4
The Tar Heels are doing a great job of not getting caught up in the all the off the field issues. They went on the road and clobbered Virginia 44-10. It was a game I thought would be much closer than what it was.
QB T.J Yates was efficient. He completed 17 out of 22 passes for 325 yards and has played pretty well all year. The Heels head to Miami to play a pivotal Coastal Division game next.
5) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 5-2 (3-1) Last Week - 6
The Yellow Jackets started slow but then cruised to a 42-14 win over Middle Tennessee St. Georgia Tech has won 3 games in a row and looks much better on defense than they did about a month ago.
I'm not ready yet to say that the Jackets can repeat as Coastal Division champions. The receivers just drop too many passes, and that is killing QB Joshua Nesbitt's completion percentage. and slowing the offense. If Georgia Tech is to win at Clemson the receivers will need to make a at least a few plays.
6) Clemson Tigers 3-3 (1-2) Last Week - 7
Clemson retired C.J Spiller's number Saturday. It was a great honor for one of Clemson's best players ever. The Tigers played inspired defense and whooped Maryland 31-7. DE De'Quan Bowers was all over the field making plays.
If there is one thing to worry about it's QB Kyle Parker. He was 7 for 20 with only 106 passing. His timing has looked off all season. Clemson faces Georgia Tech next Saturday seeking revenge for an ACCCG loss.
7) NC State Wolfpack 5-2 (2-1) Last Week - 5
On their way to being one of the ACC surprise teams this year the Wolfpack came back to earth with an unsettling 33-27 loss to East Carolina. Just add another poor non-conference game to the ACC. The defense was a no-show giving up nearly 500 yards to the Pirates.
The Wolfpack need to put this loss behind them. They face Florida State on the 28th. A win would still give them a shot at the ACC Atlantic title.
8) Maryland Terrapins 4-2 (1-1) Last Week - 8
Maryland has a nice record, but they haven't been competitive in games against the two best teams they played, West Virginia and Clemson.
I was down at Clemson watching this one, and Maryland is not a poorly coached team, they just don't have a lot of talent. Ralph Friedgen has not recruited well. Maryland needs a couple of more wins to get bowl eligible . They play at Boston College Saturday, where you should take the under no matter what it is.
9) Boston College Eagles 2-4 (0-3) Last Week - 10
The Eagles nearly pulled off the biggest upset of the ACC Conference season. They led Florida State 19-17 early in the 4th quarter, but couldn't hold on. Montel Harris did have 191 yards, rushing but the QB Chase Rettig only had 95 yards through the air.
If BC is to salvage something out of the season they need to start with a winnable game with Maryland at home.
10) Virginia Cavaliers 2-4 (0-4) Last Week - 9
The Cavaliers might want to think about a change at quarterback, because Marc Verica isn't the answer. Verica threw 3 more interceptions in the 44-10 blowout loss to North Carolina. There just aren't alot of offensive weapons for UVA and if the game gets into 20s the Cavs probably aren't going to win. The defense has given up in the neighborhood of 1000 yards the last two weeks.
Eastern Michigan should provide some relief next Saturday.
Wake Forest ran into an absolute buzzsaw at Virginia Tech. The Deacs were down 35 points before the 3rd qtr started. The defense is giving up a whopping 454 yards a game, and is 111th in the nation. Sometimes I wonder if Jim Grobe thinks he should have bolted when he was the hottest thing going in 2006. That was the year Wake Forest won the ACC.
The Deacs have two weeks to get ready for a road trip to Maryland.
12) Duke Blue Devils 1-5 (0-3) Last Week - 12
The Blue Devils are playing for next season and dropped to 1-5 after a 28-13 loss to Miami. It was a decent effort but the Blue Devils were never really in it. The offense gained less than 300 yards and had 7 turnovers.
The Blue Devils will head to Virginia Tech Saturday to face a Hokie team that is playing its best football of the season. That's not good for Duke.
