Showdown In Lincoln. Horns Recapture Some Respect...Still Room To Grow.
This game had been circled on calendars for almost a year. Texas won the last competition when it was determined by the refs there was one second left on the clock, allowing the Horns to kick a field goal for a one point win. The Horns were lucky, but few teams get to 13-0 without a little luck. They had no reason to leave the field without a sense of pride.
The game Saturday was a critical game for Texas. Yes, the Cornhuskers had a lot of reasons to want this one badly, but for Texas, it was a "must win." Three loses in a row would have been devastating. The Texas coaches did their job well.
Martinez is a great QB and will win a lot of games, but Muschamp had his number Saturday. The D executed the plan just as they had practiced and they didn't give up a touchdown.
Offensively, we finally got around to using the legs of Garrett Gilbert, and he delivered. With this option, it will open up the game for other runners, as well as the passing game. 4 of 16 doesn't remind you of Colt McCoy, but some of the incompletions were not his fault. The O-line played one of their better games of the year.
Yes, the Nebraska receivers dropped some passes that could have made a difference, but so did the Texas receivers. There were also missed calls by refs on both sides of the field. That's all a part of the game.
So.....what's next? The Horns still have some growing to do. After finishing 25-2 for the last two seasons, it was a little unrealistic to expect us to pick up where we left off last year. There are still some good teams on the schedule and nothing will come easy, but winning last Saturday gives us great hope for the future.
