BCS Rankings: Predicting How the Top 25 Will Change By Next Week
The BCS rankings for this season of college football have finally been released, and after a weekend of upsets, things are looking quite a bit different from last week.
For the second week in a row, the No. 1 ranked team has been defeated, and other teams have redeemed themselves after lackluster starts to their seasons.
Just look at Texas.
But a high ranking in Week 8 does not guarantee a team a spot for the rest of the season, and looking at the current Top 25, I'm predicting some upsets for the coming weekend.
The BCS rankings could change dramatically from week to week, and here is how I see them looking after this week...
25. Kansas State
1 of 25
Current Rank: 22
Why They'll Fall: The Kansas State Wildcats will take on the Baylor Bears next week, and I'm predicting an upset. The Bears are 2-1 in Big 12 play, and all of their victories have been very convincing.
24. Virginia Tech
2 of 25
Current Rank: 25
Why They'll Climb: With Kansas State falling to No. 25, Virginia Tech will move up to No. 24.
23. Mississippi State
3 of 25
Current Rank: 24
Why They'll Climb: The Bulldogs have been impressive this season, and with a victory over UAB, we will start to see them make a slow but steady climb up the rankings.
22. Arkansas
4 of 25
Current Rank: 23
Why They'll Climb: The Razorbacks suffered a tough loss in a shootout against Auburn this weekend, but I expect them to take out some frustration on Ole Miss.
21. Arizona
5 of 25
Current Rank: 18
Why They'll Fall: The Wildcats' next game is against the Washington Huskies who just had an impressive victory in 2OT over Oregon State. The Beavers handed Arizona their first loss of the season, and I think the Huskies will surprise us with the upset.
20. West Virginia
6 of 25
Current Rank: 20
Why They'll Stay Put: The Mountaineers' only loss came to current No. 6 LSU, and their next game is against Syracuse. I think West Virginia will get the win, but it will not be impressive enough to move them up in the rankings.
19. South Carolina
7 of 25
Current Rank: 21
Why They'll Climb: Even after a loss to Kentucky, the GameCocks are a solid football team who will crush Vanderbilt this coming weekend. Strength of schedule plays a big part in South Carolina passing West Virginia in the rankings.
18. Texas
8 of 25
Current Rank: 19
Why They'll Climb: The Longhorns are back in the top 25 after a solid win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and they should be able to continue this momentum and defeat Iowa State this weekend.
17. Iowa
9 of 25
Current Rank: 15
Why They'll Fall: The Hawkeyes' next game is against the dominant Wisconsin Badgers who just upset the former No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes. I expect Wisconsin to handle Iowa in the same fashion.
16. Oklahoma State
10 of 25
Current Rank: 14
Why They'll Fall: Oklahoma State has had an extremely impressive season so far, going 6-0 and 2-0 in Big 12 play, but their next game is against Nebraska. The Cornhuskers found themselves falling all the way down to No. 16 after losing to a previously unranked Texas Longhorns, and they will be hungry for this win.
15. Florida State
11 of 25
Current Rank: 17
Why They'll Climb: The Seminoles are proving to be the best team in the ACC with victories over Miami and Boston College as well as strong out of conference teams like BYU. We will see Florida State continue to move up throughout the season.
14. Nebraska
12 of 25
Current Rank: 16
Why They'll Climb: The Huskers lost their first game of the season to a desperate Texas Longhorns squad, and they will not lose two in a row. Oklahoma State will give Nebraska the chance to prove their BCS worth.
13. Stanford
13 of 25
Current Rank: 12
Why They'll Fall: Stanford has a bye this coming week, but they will see themselves slipping anyway with other teams in the country shaking up the rankings. Don't worry. The Cardinal will move back up as the season progresses.
12. LSU
14 of 25
Current Rank: 6
Why They'll Fall: Two words: Cameron. Newton. Les Miles' luck runs out in the battle of the undefeated Tigers, and Auburn gets the win.
11. Wisconsin
15 of 25
Current Rank: 13
Why They'll Climb: The Badgers dominated the Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Iowa Hawkeyes will be no different. Wisconsin wants to claim the Big Ten, and Iowa won't stop them.
10. Utah
16 of 25
Current Rank: 9
Why They'll Fall: The Utes will get the win against Colorado State, but more impressive victories by other schools will send them down a spot in the rankings.
9. Ohio State
17 of 25
Current Rank: 10
Why They'll Climb: The Buckeyes suffered their first loss of the season to the Wisconsin Badgers, but they shouldn't have a problem handling Purdue this weekend. Ohio State has a rough road ahead of them, and they know they need to win out the rest of the season to stay relevant in BCS rankings.
8. TCU
18 of 25
Current Rank: 5
Why They'll Fall: While a win over Air Force is nothing to laugh at, the Frogs will lose their top five spot to teams with more impressive wins.
7. Alabama
19 of 25
Current Rank: 8
Why They'll Climb: The Crimson Tide may not lose a single game they have left on their schedule, and even if they do...it won't be to Tennessee.
6. Missouri
20 of 25
Current Rank: 11
Why They'll Climb: Mizzou is still undefeated, and the Tigers will move up big time this week. Click to the next slide to see why.
5. Oklahoma
21 of 25
Current Rank: 1
Why They'll Fall: Okay, I know this is going to have all you Sooners fans ready to tear me apart, but hear me out. Looking at quarterbacks, Landry Jones and Blaine Gabbert are actually very similar, and both teams schedules have been comparable as well. The Sooners crushed Florida State, and the Tigers have been winning by at least 10 points (except for a fluke against San Diego State).
Mizzou could give the Sooners their greatest challenge of the season, and I'm predicting an upset on Saturday night.
4. Michigan State
22 of 25
Current Rank: 7
Why They'll Climb: A Wisconsin win over Iowa will only work in favor of the undefeated Spartans. Pending a surprising upset by Northwestern, Michigan State will move into the top five next week.
3. Boise State
23 of 25
Current Rank: 3
Why They'll Stay Put: It will take some big upsets to move the Broncos down from their No. 3 spot, and I think they'll stay put at No. 3 for this week. If teams like Michigan State and Missouri keep winning, we will definitely see Boise State slip in the weeks to come.
2. Auburn
24 of 25
Current Rank: 4
Why They'll Climb: After next weekend, the Auburn Tigers will emerge as the only undefeated team in the SEC, and they will claim the No. 2 spot in the country.
1. Oregon
25 of 25
Current Rank: 2
Why They'll Climb: UCLA may have defeated Texas, but the Ducks will easily continue their winning streak next weekend and move up to the No. 1 spot.
