College Football Rankings: Who Is Overrated in Week 7 Coaches and AP Polls?
One week after being crowned No. 1 in the major college football rankings, Ohio State goes down to Wisconsin.
As a result, after two weeks of college football, we'll have three different number ones. The excitement continues around the nation and the polls keep moving and shaking.
Of course, as we always do on Sunday's, it's time to figure out who's overrated and getting way too much love.
Here are 10 teams that are overrated in the coaches' and AP polls.
10. Oklahoma State Cowboys
1 of 10
The coaches are probably focused on the perfect record and high-powered offense of the Cowboys, who are 6-0 this year. As a result, they have them ranked over Arizona and Florida State in the coaches' poll.
Oklahoma State barely defeated Texas A&M in Week 5, 38-35 and sit all the way at number 15 on the coaches poll.
But the fact remains—Oklahoma State still has not played a top-ranked opponent. While Arizona and Florida State have had more challenging games this season.
Until Oklahoma State proves themselves against a top-ranked rival, then they're still overrated.
That may change next week with Nebraska waiting in the wings next Saturday.
9. Florida State Seminoles
2 of 10
After convincingly defeating the Miami Hurricanes, 45-17 last weekend, the Seminoles barely got away with a win against Boston College on Saturday, 24-19.
It can be argued that Florida State shouldn't be ranked above Arizona on the coaches' poll. The Wildcats have had a bigger win against a Big Ten powerhouse in Iowa and play through a tough, tough Pac-10 conference. While the Seminoles only have the big win against Miami (Fl.) to show for and play through a somewhat weak ACC.
At least the AP has it right. Arizona is ranked over Florida State.
8. Stanford Cardinal
3 of 10
Stanford took the week off with a bye. But apparently this week the media thinks they're better than Nebraska.
It's understandable that the 'Huskers took a fall in polls after their loss to unranked Texas but having Stanford pass them over, after not playing this weekend may be too extreme.
The Cardinal barely won against an unranked USC team last weekend and all of a sudden they continue to move up in the polls.
7. LSU Tigers
4 of 10
The Tigers jumped over Alabama in both polls when both teams won this week.
Alabama defeated an SEC rival in Ole Miss 23-10 while LSU took down a cupcake in McNeese State, 32-10. And that LSU victory apparantly warrants them surpassing Alabama.
If anything, the only team that should have a claim to getting ranked above Alabama would be Michigan State who has been tearing through their schedule in a very convincing fashion—unlike LSU.
In addition, TCU tears through their Mountain West rival team BYU 31-3 and gets surpassed by the Sooners who shut out a poor Iowa State squad, 52-0.
6. Oregon Ducks
5 of 10
The Ducks get rewarded with the number one ranking in both the coaches' and AP polls—while they sat the week out with a bye week.
It's hard to think of the Ducks as a number one team and consider them deserving. They may be an offensive powerhouse but their schedule has been relatively easy to play through after six games.
The toughest team they've had to face has been the Stanford Cardinal, which gave them problems for at least half of their game. However, two other unranked Pac-10 opponents—Washington State and Arizona State—also gave the Ducks some difficulties.
If they're already having problems with bottom-dwelling Pac-10 teams, then they'll likely struggle with harder competition ahead in their schedule.
At this point, Boise State has a stronger claim to number after pitching two shutouts against weak opponents—San Jose State and New Mexico State. And also defeating a pair of quality foes and top-ranked competition—Virginia Tech and Oregon State.
5. Oklahoma Sooners
6 of 10
They jumped over TCU in the coaches poll after a 52-0 shutout on Saturday but they defeated a mediocre Iowa State Team that already had three losses in the season before their game. Yes it was a Big 12 opponent but Auburn has a stronger claim to surpassing TCU than Oklahoma.
At least the Tigers dispatched a quality SEC team in the Arkanasas Razorbacks this week, ranked number 13 on the polls.
4. Missouri Tigers
7 of 10
Missouri has been undefeated all year with a 6-0 record but they've seen a shortage of challenging competition.
Just like last week they still rank above the Arizona Wildcats. While the Wildcats defeated a Big Ten powerhouse in the Iowa Hawkeyes and fell to a very good Pac-10 team in Oregon State, the Tigers coasted through a favorable schedule.
The coaches can't possibly consider them a better team than Arizona. The Tigers will finally be tested starting next weekend when they face Oklahoma and Nebraska in back-to-back games. And the coaches' will soon enough realized how overrated the Tigers have become.
3. Alabama Crimson Tide
8 of 10
It surprising to see that in the coaches' polls, the Crimson Tide are still ranked above the Michigan State Spartans.
The Spartans are still not getting enough love from the coaches and Alabama is getting way too much repect.
Are the other coaches scared of Nick Saban?
Michigan State have rolled off seven straight wins and took out the Wisconsin Badgers along the way. They same Badgers team that just defeated a number one team in Ohio State. But they still have Alabama and other SEC team teams ahead of them.
That doesn't add up.
2. West Virginia Mountaineers
9 of 10
Yes, the Gamecocks had a monumental letdown on Saturday when they fell to unranked SEC foe Kentucky.
But the coaches now have them ranked below the West Virginia Mountaineers.
They're giving West Virginia too much credit here, especially by putting them about Steve Spurrier's team.
Just because South Carolina has two losses doesn't mean they should be ranked behind West Virginia. The Gamecocks have had to battle three teams ranked in the Top 25 this season while the Mountaineers only had to play against one, LSU—which they lost to.
1. Ohio State Buckeyes
10 of 10
In his biggest game of the season so far, Terrelle Pryor, failed to show up. If he was still in consideration before the Wisconsin game, Pryor no longer should be. The guy was inefficient and unproductive as a passer and didn't get much done as a runner.
Wisconsin was able to stop him. So why are the Buckeyes still ranked above the Badgers in the coaches' poll?
The only explanation is that they're still overrated in the rankings. They were overrated as a number one seed and they're still overrated at number ten.
When faced with their toughest opponent to date, they lose. But still rank above other the Badgers and the Hawkeyes in the poll.
The Badgers' only loss came against Michigan State, on the road. And the Spartans are now the only team in the Big Ten with an unblemished record.
Even the Hawkeyes have a claim to be ranked atop the Buckeyes, with their only loss of the season coming against a very good Pac-10 team in Arizona.
