Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys: Time for His Toys To Rescue the 'Boys

M.J. OverstreetOct 13, 2010

It's not far fetched to say that this weekend's game between the disappointing Dallas Cowboys (1-3) and Minnesota Vikings (1-3) will involve the two most talented teams in the league.

In many ways, the game is a watershed moment for both Tony Romo and Brett Favre: one looking to finally break through and take his place among the current NFL elite; the other trying to grab one last moment in the sun while battling Father Time, a nagging elbow injury and the swarming allegations that he sent inappropriate text messages to a former Jets employee.

Adding to the drama of the event is the back story involving the two QBs.

Romo, a Wisconsin native, has made it clear that he idolized Favre while growing up. And much the way Kobe Bryant displays the same mannerisms as his idol Michael Jordan, Romo has an uncanny Favre-like demeanor.

But his idolization of Favre has plagued him to a certain extent, especially considering that the object of his desire has stood in the way of him getting to the Super Bowl.  In last year's second round NFC Playoff matchup, Romo appeared to let his awe of Favre get the best of him.

But now it's time for Romo to face down his hero—to turn the tables and make the legend respect his admirer.  Accomplishing such a feat would be a cathartic moment for the Cowboy QB—one that could very well give him the confidence to finally lead his team to the promised land and allow him to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.

Both signal callers have unlimited weapons at their disposal.  Favre need not look any further than Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, Randy Moss and Visanthe Shiancoe.  And when Sidney Rice returns—yikes...look out!

But Romo may have an even more impressive supporting cast.  Yes, "Tony's Toys" are abundant.  Jason Witten is arguably the league's most efficient tight end, and his backup, Martellus Bennett, has freakish size and is coming on strong as of late. Felix Jones and Marion Barber have the potential to be lethal.  And at wideout, the 'Boys boast maybe the best trio in the league with Miles Austin, Roy Williams and Dez Bryant.

Putting both teams' dismal 1-3 records aside, this Sunday's showdown will be dripping with big time playmakers.  And if Tony Romo wants to take that next big step of becoming a top four QB and not just a guy who puts up good Fantasy numbers and makes an occasional Pro Bowl as an alternate, he'll have to walk into the Metrodome with one mission:  To take the field with laser-like focus and resist letting "Favre Admiration" and "Favre Intimidation" overcome him.
