Max Hall and the 10 Least Likely Starters In The NFL Today
The 2010 NFL season has been loaded with unexpected quarterbacks stepping in to try and salvage a win for their respective teams.
Coaches on more than a couple of teams have been forced to look deep into their depth chart to find a starting quarterback.
Some of these quarterbacks have been somewhat successful and others have completely bombed.
No one will ever forget how Kurt Warner started his career as an unexpected starter for the St. Louis Rams, eventually leading them to a Super Bowl win over the Tennessee Titans.
Is it possible that we could witness the second coming of Kurt Warner this season? Here's ten suitors looking to take the NFL world by storm.
10. Todd Collins
1 of 10
This guy has been in the NFL primarily as a backup since 1995 and has never quite been able to secure a full-time starting position.
His busiest season came in 1997 when he started 14 games for the Bills, but he chalked up a quarterback rating of less than 70.
No one saw him starting this season, and if you did, you should bet on pro football as a career.
With Jay Cutler going down in the first half against the Giants two weeks ago, Collins got the opportunity to start against the Panthers.
That's where he managed to amass 32 yards passing and four interceptions. I think it's safe to say Collins blew his opportunity of ever starting in the NFL ever again.
9. Seneca Wallace
2 of 10
Seneca Wallace has had moderate success in the NFL, but he's never been able to hold down a starting job for an entire season.
He actually has respectable career numbers in five NFL seasons with 29 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions.
For whatever reason, Wallace has never gotten the full opportunity to lead a team an entire season.
He backed up the veteran Matt Hasselbeck during his time in Seattle, which really kept him from taking over the reigns as the franchise quarterback. For the most part he was great at doing his job of being the backup quarterback while he was there.
It looked like that would happen to Wallace again in Cleveland with Jake Delhomme being the starting quarterback ahead of Wallace, but with Delhomme's lingering injury, Wallace has gotten a great opportunity to revive his career.
8. Charlie Batch
3 of 10
Many had probably forgotten Charlie Batch was even around entering the 2010 NFL season.
Batch got his opportunity as an NFL starter all the way back in 1998 when he was drafted by the Detroit Lions.
He was the main guy in Detroit up until 2001 when he had trouble staying healthy. Due to an injury, Batch was never able to play for the Lions in their wildcard game in 1999.
He's played the backup role well while he's been in Pittsburgh, but he entered this season being the third-string behind Dennis Dixon.
After Dixon got injured against the Titans, and with Roethlisberger still in the midst of his suspension, Batch stepped in as the starting quarterback for two games.
He played damage-control effectively and has kept the Steelers in strong contention with the Ravens.
With Roethlisberger returning this week, it's back to riding the pine for this NFL journeyman.
7. Bruce Gradkowski
4 of 10
With Jason Campbell coming into the Raiders organization in an attempt to revitailize a team with a ton of tradition, it was very unlikely that Bruce Gradkowski would become the full-time starter.
Sometimes, the unlikely happens, and Gradkowski has completely turned his career around with the opportunity he has been given.
Gradkowski's 2010 stats may not look very good, but think of who's he's playing for. Under Gradkowski's leadership, the Raiders have become a much more competitive team.
Head coach Tom Cable must have faith in Gradkowski because he plans to start Gradkowski this upcoming week if he's healthy enough.
Gradkowski has always been a fan favorite, and it looks like he has a chance to become a full-time starter in the NFL while he's still at a young age.
6. Jimmy Clausen
5 of 10
It was thought going into this season that Jimmy Clausen would be held on the bench to learn the system before being thrust into the fire.
With head coach John Fox's seat getting hotter by the minute, he decided to throw Clausen in as the full-time starter.
We see this happen to promising rookie quarterback all the time, but Clausen has handled it very well despite still being winless as a starting quarterback.
He played great football against the defending world champs and has a long season ahead of him to try in make his rookie season a good one. Too bad he has hardly anyone to throw to outside of Steve Smith.
5. David Carr
6 of 10
David Carr hasn't become the 49ers' starter just yet, but it's ever so close.
Carr was a full-time starter for five straight seasons before giving way to Matt Schaub in Houston. Up until now, he's been a forgotten figure in the NFL.
The comeback attempt that the 49ers put together against the Eagles this past Sunday just postponed the inevitable. Alex Smith just can't seem to get it done as a full-time starter in this league. Well, at least not with the 49ers.
If Smith is ousted as the starter, then Carr will be given a unique opportunity to take over this team. He's shown in the past that he can play good effective football despite playing for a bad team.
The 49ers are the best team that Carr has ever had the chance to be the full-time starter for. Deep down, he's got to be hoping that Smith tanks in his next start.
Carr may have to wait for a couple more games, but unless the 49ers make a dramatic turnaround, then Mike Singletary will be forced to try something new.
4. Kerry Collins
7 of 10
With Vince Young's inconsistency issues, it's always a possibility that Kerry Collins could reemerge as the Titans starter.
Too bad Collins' best playing days are way behind him. He may continue to be a safety net for head coach Jeff Fisher in case things go sour with Young, but he's not going to lead this team anywhere far as the starter.
He got a little bit of playing time against a relaxed Steelers defense towards the end of the game and he still turned the ball over.
There's still always that chance as long as you back up an inconsistent quarterback like Young.
3. Shaun Hill
8 of 10
Out of all of the new starters in the NFL this season, Shaun Hill has put up the best numbers surprisingly.
Granted, he has Calvin Johnson to throw to, but still, he has managed eight touchdown passes and over 1,200 passing yards.
He also came within a technicality of defeating the Bears in week one. Don't sleep on Hill becoming a full-time starter for a desperate team in the next few seasons. It won't happen in Detroit with Matthew Stafford at the helm, but he's showing that he can be dependable quarterback for a team that is desperate at quarterback.
It hasn't been due to a lack of offense for why the Lions only have one win this season.
2. Max Hall
9 of 10
You really have to admire Max Hall's guts in his performance against the Saints. Even though it took a lot of luck to get that win, he still kept chugging along.
He took hard hit after hard hit but continued to push forward. Apparently, his teammates came out and showed their appreciation.
In case you didn't realize this, Hall wasn't even selected in the 2010 NFL Draft.
It took the NFL's worst quarterback situation, with both Matt Leinart and Derek Anderson proving they couldn't get it done, for Hall to get his chance.
You might remember how Tom Brady got his first opportunity when Drew Bledsoe stopped being so effective. This might not be the exact same scenario, but the point is Hall could end up panning out to be a great NFL quarterback one day.
1. Michael Vick
10 of 10
No one could have expected a concussion to Kevin Kolb in the first game of the season and a quick flip-flop by head coach Andy Reid on his starting quarterback, but that's exactly what happened.
Now it's Michael Vick's team, not Kolb's. Agree with it or not, Vick has finally dug himself out of the hole he created.
Many never saw Vick entering the NFL ever again after he hit rock bottom, much less starting for a team under these current circumstances.
What is even more shocking is how Vick has looked even better than he ever did with Atlanta. It's changed the way we look at the Eagles and the NFC East as a whole. He gives the Eagles a chance to win a division that is currently anyone's guess who is the favorite.
When Kolb is in the game, the Eagles offense looks very ordinary. With Vick in the game, they look like one of the most dangerous offenses in the NFL.
