NFL Power Rankings Week 6: AFC North Dominates, Cowboys Tumble
Another week of football has shaken up the rankings completely, and everything you thought you knew about some of these teams may have to be re-examined.
As all the information comes in, how much do the upsets by the Cardinals and Raiders affect their power rankings? It's a legitimate question.
But enough, I'm Brian DiTullio, NFL Featured Columnist for Bleacher Report, and here's a look at the Week 6 NFL Power Rankings.
32. Buffalo Bills
1 of 32
2010 Record: 0-5
Last Week's Ranking: 31
Last Game: Lost, 36-26, to the Jacksonville Jaguars
The Buffalo Bills officially have hit rock bottom here. The team scored three touchdowns, but the Jaguars scored more. The Bills running game was anemic, and there's no light at the end of the tunnel for this team.
Next Game: At Baltimore in two weeks
31. San Francisco 49ers
2 of 32
2010 Record: 0-5
Last Week's Ranking: 32
Last Game: Lost, 27-24, to Philadelphia
The only thing keeping the Niners out of the last spot is the fact that they've been in just about every game this year and looked like they could pull out a victory. That hasn't always been the case with Buffalo, so the Niners move up a spot.
Head coach Mike Singletary definitely is on one of the hottest hot seats there is in the NFL right now, but he'll live to coach another week.
This Week: at home vs. Oakland
30. Carolina Panthers
3 of 32
2010 Record: 0-5
Last Week's Ranking: 29
Last Game: Lost, 23-6, to Chicago
The Panthers have been wandering around the bottom the last few weeks, never quite finishing last. But rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen still has a ways to go with his development, and the Panthers still couldn't win after intercepting Todd Collins four times.
Next Game: At San Francisco in two weeks
29. Cleveland Browns
4 of 32
2010 Record: 1-4
Last Week's Ranking: 26
Last Game: Lost, 20-10, to Atlanta
The Browns lost both Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace this week to ankle injuries and may have to go into Pittsburgh starting rookie Colt McCoy or possibly newly re-signed Brett Ratliff. The Browns offense is conservative as it is, and the Steelers defense is about as stingy as it gets.
Next Game: At Pittsburgh
28. St. Louis Rams
5 of 32
2010 Record: 2-3
Last Week's Ranking: 22
Last Game: Lost 44-6 to Detroit
The Rams had a lot of things going for them and with two wins had begun to move out of the bottom five of the rankings. However, not only did they lose to Detroit, but quarterback Sam Bradford lost his best wide receiver, Mark Clayton, in the process. It's not looking good for the Rams as they enter Week 6.
Next Game: At home vs.San Diego
27. Detroit Lions
6 of 32
2010 Record: 1-4
Last Week's Ranking: 30
Last Game: Won against the St. Louis Rams, 44-6
The Lions continue to improve and destroyed the St. Louis Rams, good enough to move them up a couple of spots. This will be a team to keep your eye on next year. They've got a lot of young talent that will be a force to be reckoned with soon.
Next Game: At New York Giants
26. Dallas Cowboys
7 of 32
2010 Record: 1-3
Last Week's Ranking: 24
Last Game: Lost 34-27 to Tennessee
Dallas Cowboys fans need to understand something before they throw a fit over how low the Cowboys are ranked.
Your team is 1-3.
Win some games and they'll get ranked higher.
Tony Romo threw three interceptions, including the game-clincher, and most of his 406 yards came after the catch—so let's all calm down here.
Next Game: At home vs. Tennessee
25. Minnesota Vikings
8 of 32
2010 Record: 1-3
Last Week's Ranking: 23
Last Game: Lost, 29-20 to the Jets
The Vikings got a lift with the addition of Randy Moss, but now their secondary is beat up and Favre just has become a distraction who isn't playing up to his 2009 form.
Next Game: At home versus Dallas
24. Cincinnati Bengals
9 of 32
2010 Record: 2-3
Last Week's Ranking: 17
Last Game: Lost, 24-21, to Tampa Bay
The Bengals now have lost two games in a row and play in the same division as Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Carson Palmer is making poor decisions on the field, and that's been the nail in the coffin so far.
Next Game: At Atlanta in two weeks
23. Oakland Raiders
10 of 32
2010 Record: 2-3
Last Week's Ranking: 28
Last Game: Won, 35-27, vs. the San Diego Chargers
The Raiders pulled a victory out against the Chargers despite losing Bruce Gradkowski. Two blocked punts from the special teams didn't hurt either. Jason Campbell now has another chance to prove he's the quarterback for this team.
Next Game: At San Francisco
22. Jacksonville Jaguars
11 of 32
2010 Record: 3-2
Last Week's Ranking: 25
Last Game: A 36-26 victory over Buffalo
The Jaguars beat the winless Bills in a high-scoring affair. The Jaguars may be 3-2, but beating the Bills doesn't count for all that much. The Jags could start rising a lot higher if David Garrard continues to improve and they're able to add a few more numbers to the win column.
Next Game: Against Tennessee on Monday Night Football
21. Denver Broncos
12 of 32
2010 Record: 2-3
Last Week's Ranking: 16
Last Game: Lost 31-17 to Baltimore
Kyle Orton has been putting up a lot of good numbers, but the Broncos still have no running game worth bringing up, and the Ravens defense made sure the Broncos regretted that dent in their armor. The Broncos have to come up with a solution to their running game or there will be a lot of heart-breaking losses this season.
Knowshon Moreno is supposed to return this week, so we'll see what happens.
Next Game: Vs. New York Jets
20. Arizona Cardinals
13 of 32
2010 Record: 3-2
Last Week's Ranking: 27
Last Game: Won, 30-20, over New Orleans
The Cardinals move up six spots after stunning the defending Super Bowl champs with rookie Max Hall at quarterback. They'd move up more, but New Orleans is showing a lot of problems, and Hall still is a rookie. Still, more wins will mean more upward movement.
Next Game: At Seattle in two weeks
19. Seattle Seahawks
14 of 32
2010 Record: 2-2
Last Week's Ranking: 18
Last Game: Lost, 20-3, to the Rams
The Seahawks lost to the Rams in a game that stunned a lot of people. This is a game that, on paper, the Seahawks should've won. Too much upward movement below them drops them two spots going into this week's game versus the Chargers.
Next Game: At home vs. San Diego
18. San Diego Chargers
15 of 32
2010 Record: 2-3
Last Week's Ranking: 12
Last Game: Lost 35-27 to Oakland Raiders
The Chargers are not as good as they should be, and it's up to Norv Turner to figure out why this team is losing games that, on paper, they shouldn't be losing. One more loss like this week's and the Chargers will take a serious dip in the rankings.
Next Game: At St. Louis
17. Green Bay Packers
16 of 32
2010 Record: 3-2
Last Week's Ranking: 10
Last Game: Lost 16-13 to the Washington Redskins
The Packers have been beating themselves this season, but now it seems like half the team, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers, are down with injuries. This team is on the verge of a lost season if they don't heal and start playing smarter football.
One of those two options is controllable.
Next Game: At home vs. Miami
16. Miami Dolphins
17 of 32
2010 Record: 2-2
Last Week's Ranking: 15
Last Game: Lost, 31-23, to the Jets
The Dolphins got killed by the New England Patriots, but that was the Patriots, and the Dolphins schedule includes the reeling Green Bay Packers.
Next Game: At Green Bay
15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
18 of 32
2010 Record: 3-1
Last Week's Ranking: 21
Last Game: Won 24-21 against the Bengals
The Bucs went out and beat the Bengals as Josh Freeman put together two scoring drives in the fourth quarter. You can't knock that, and the Bucs move up a few spots.
Next Game: At home versus New Orleans
14. Chicago Bears
19 of 32
2010 Record: 4-1
Last Week's Ranking: 19
Last Week: Won 23-6 over the Panthers
The Bears starting quarterback this week, Todd Collins, threw four interceptions, and the Bears won the game, so they move up a few spots.
Jay Cutler still is injured, Collins still threw four interceptions and the Panthers still haven't won a game.
Next Week: At home vs. Seattle
13. New York Giants
20 of 32
2010 Record: 3-2
Last Week's Ranking: 20
Last Game: Won, 34-10, over Houston
The Giants are starting to put all the pieces together and are becoming a team to be reckoned with again. They're still ranked below the Saints and the team they just beat, the Texans, but not for long if they keep playing like this.
Next Game: At home vs. Detroit
12. New Orleans Saints
21 of 32
2010 Record: 3-2
Last Week's Ranking: 9
Last Game: Lost, 30-20, to the Arizona Cardinals
The Saints are in danger of plummeting out of the Top 15 entirely if they don't figure out why they're not playing up to the level a defending Super Bowl Champion should. The Saints have squeaked out a few close wins, but they couldn't do it this week as the Cardinals beat them.
The Saints should respond better this week, but you never know.
Next Game: At Tampa Bay
11. Houston Texans
22 of 32
2010 Record: 3-2
Last Week's Ranking: 6
Last Game: Lost 34-10 to the New York Giants
The Texans got their butts handed to them by the New York Giants this week, but they have some quality wins on their schedule already and they face the Kansas City Chiefs this week. The Texans aren't out of anything yet, and the Giants game, for the moment, can be chalked up to "one of those things."
Next Game: At home vs. Kansas City
10. Kansas City Chiefs
23 of 32
2010 Record: 3-1
Last Week's Ranking: 5
Last Game: Lost, 19-9 to Indianapolis
The Chiefs got their first loss of the season and couldn't manage to get a touchdown versus the Colts. It's too early to say if the Chiefs' early success was a mirage, but they're definitely still a team to be taken seriously.
Next Game: At Houston
9. Indianapolis Colts
24 of 32
2010 Record: 3-2
Last Week's Ranking: 8
Last Game: A 19-9 win over the Chiefs
The Colts are above .500, but they've been struggling to get the wins they do have. Still, Peyton Manning is the quarterback, and you have to believe, until proven otherwise, that the Colts will be in the thick of things come playoff time.
Next Game: Versus Houston in two weeks
8. Philadelphia Eagles
25 of 32
2010 Record: 3-2
Last Week's Ranking: 14
Last Game: Beat the Niners 27-24
Between Michael Vick and Kevin Kolb, head coach Andy Reid has a good problem on his hands. Kolb looked pretty good versus the 49ers. LeSean McCoy also had a pretty good night. They face a tough test coming up versus the Falcons.
Next Game: Versus Atlanta
7. Tennessee Titans
26 of 32
2010 Record: 3-2
Last Week's Ranking: 11
Last Game: Won 34-27 over the Cowboys
The Titans played a good game versus the Cowboys as the offense capitalized on the Tony Romo turnovers, and the special teams unit just gave the team every opportunity to have a good day. The Titans are looking like they're just going to get better.
Next Game: At Jacksonville on Monday Night Football
6. Washington Redskins
27 of 32
2010 Record: 3-2
Last Week's Ranking: 13
Last Game: Won, 16-13, over Green Bay
The Redskins are turning into a team that guts out victories by playing four quarters, capitalizing on the other team's mistakes and not hurting themselves.
Next Game: Versus Indianapolis
5. New England Patriots
28 of 32
2010 Record: 3-1
Last Week's Ranking: 4
Last Game: Beat Miami 41-14
The Patriots were idle this week and lose one spot in the rankings because of the Jets, Falcons and Ravens all won. They face the Baltimore Ravens this coming week.
Next Game: At home vs. Baltimore
4. Atlanta Falcons
29 of 32
2010 Record: 4-1
Last Week's Ranking: 1
Last Game: Won, 20-10 over Cleveland
The Falcons beat the Browns, but it wasn't in decisive fashion. The Browns played the second half with a hobbled quarterback, and the Falcons still only managed to score a total of 20 points. That's going to knock them out of the top spot despite their record.
Next Game: At Philadelphia
3. New York Jets
30 of 32
2010 Record: 4-1
Last Week's Ranking: 3
Last Game: Beat Minnesots 29-20
The Jets are a team that is built to beat the Patriots and Dolphins, both of which are good teams. They handled the Vikings and Santonio Holmes now is back from suspension.
Next Game: At Denver
2. Baltimore Ravens
31 of 32
2010 Record: 4-1
Last Week's Ranking: 7
Last Game: Won, 31-17, over Denver
The Ravens are turning into the team the rest of the AFC North feared they would be. The Broncos could not score against them, and the Ravens put up 31 points against the Broncos Defense.
Next Game: At New England
1. Pittsburgh Steelers
32 of 32
2010 Record: 3-1
Last Week's Ranking: 2
Last Game: 17-14 loss to the Ravens
The Steelers have one of the best defenses in the league and went 3-1 despite not having their starting quarterback. Ben Roethlisberger returns this week to face the injured Cleveland Browns.
It's going to be ugly for Browns fans this Sunday.
Next Game: At home vs. Cleveland
