College Football Rankings: Power Ranking AP Top 25 After Week 6

With Week 6 of college football in the books, there are teams in the polls with unexpected seasons unfolding at the midway point of the 2010 campaign that are playing much better than their number given by pollsters yesterday.

With the loss by Alabama to South Carolina Saturday, the number one position has been bestowed to the Ohio State Buckeyes as of now but do they deserve the top spot of all the great teams currently in the Top 10?  

Here’s a look at the power rankings of the current AP Top 25 teams as they stand at this moment…

25: Oregon State 3-2 (2-0 Pac-10)

Previous Game: W vs. Arizona 29-27

This Week: at Washington, Saturday

After upsetting Arizona this past weekend, the Beavers will look to keep improving from their tough September with a trip to Seattle to play Jake Locker and disappointing Pac-10 rival Washington this Saturday. 

24: Florida 4-2 (2-2 SEC East)

Previous Game: L vs. LSU 33-29

This Week: vs. Mississippi State, Saturday

The Gators will look to snap their two game losing streak against Mississippi State on Homecoming but with the injuries to starter John Brantley, Florida might need the impressive Trey Burton to take the reins of the offense.

23: West Virginia 4-1 (0-0 Big East)

Previous Game: W vs. UNLV 49-10

This Week: vs. South Florida, Thursday

The Mountaineers have found an effective vertical passing game as sophomore Geno Smith will look to receivers Jock Sanders and Tavon Austin against South Florida in their Big East opener on Thursday night

22: Missouri 5-0 (1-0 Big 12 North)

Previous Game: W vs. Colorado 26-0

This Week: at Texas A&M, Saturday

With a trip to College Station approaching this week, the Missouri Tigers will look to keep their impressive 2010 campaign as they look to get a big win before they host Oklahoma in Columbia during Homecoming.

21: Air Force 5-1 (3-0 MWC)

This Week: at San Diego State, Saturday

As the Falcons continue their impressive run, Air Force will travel to San Diego State with their balanced offense as they attempt to make an impact on the Mountain West conference title this season.

20: Arizona 4-1 (1-1 Pac-10)

Previous Game: L vs. Oregon State 29-27

This Week: at Washington State, Saturday

In the desert, the Wildcats look to bounce back from their first loss of the season against Pac-10 basement inhabitant Washington State after being upended by Oregon State at home this past Saturday.

19: Nevada 6-0 (1-0 WAC)

Previous Game: W vs. San Jose State 35-13

This Week: at Hawaii, Saturday

As the Wolf Pack travels to the Big Island, Colin Kaepernick will continue his record breaking season as they play the Mountain West leading Hawaii Warriors this weekend.

18: Wisconsin 5-1 (1-1 Big Ten)

Previous Game: W vs. Minnesota 41-23

This Week: vs. No. 1 Ohio State, Saturday

The Badgers will look to salvage their Big Ten Championship hopes with upsetting the top ranked Buckeyes as they’ll arrive to the hostile Camp Randall this Saturday for the marquee game in the Big Ten this weekend.

17: Oklahoma State 5-0 (1-0 Big 12)

Previous Game: W vs. Louisiana-Lafayette 54-28

Next Week: at Texas Tech, Saturday

The Cowboys and their impressive offense led by QB Brandon Weeden will try not to gaze past Texas Tech this weekend to the contest with Big 12 North rival Nebraska on the 23^rd this month.

The Hawkeyes will travel to Ann Arbor with their sturdy defense looking to control the Wolverines’ Heisman contender Denard Robinson as they try to keep their Big 10 Championship hopes alive with big games against Michigan State and Ohio State looming later this season.

This Week: vs. Boston College

After the beat down the Seminoles laid on the Hurricanes last Saturday, Florida State will look to continue the offensive downpour as the quarterback challenged Boston College Eagles travel to Tallahassee in this ACC Atlantic division game.

As Andrew Luck and Stanford has their bye this week, the Cardinal will look to continue their quest at a Rose Bowl berth on October 23^rd when Washington State travels to Palo Alto for another Pac-10 conference battle in 2010.

13: Utah 5-0 (2-0 MWC)

This Week: at Wyoming, Saturday

As the Mountain West is ultra competitive in 2010, the Utes will look to notch another win in conference play against Wyoming in a game that Utah will look to win in blow out after the Cowboys have been shredded by other programs like Boise State and TCU in 2010.

This Week:  at No. 7 Auburn

The two higher powered offenses of the SEC West will meet in Auburn this weekend as Ryan Mallet and Cam Newton square off in this battle of marquee quarterbacks in the SEC.

11: Michigan State 6-0 (2-0 Big Ten)

Previous Game: W vs. Michigan 34-17

Next Game: vs. Illinois, Saturday

After the big win against Michigan last Saturday, the Spartans will look to take care of the Fighting Illini after they returned with an impressive win of their own on the road against Penn State, the first in school history.

10: LSU 6-0 (4-0 SEC West)

Previous Game: W vs. Florida 33-29

Next Game: vs. McNeese State, Saturday

After a win in Gainesville, Les Miles and the Tigers will look to have an easy game against McNeese State without an criticism of the play calling, clock management, or any other topic that doesn’t sit well with the people of the Bayou.

9: South Carolina 4-1 (2-1 SEC East)

Previous Game: W vs. Alabama 35-21

Next Game: at Kentucky, Saturday

Stephen Garcia and the Gamecocks will look to keep on track for a potential SEC East title with a potential trap game in Lexington after the biggest win in South Carolina football history with the upset of No. 1 Alabama in Columbia last Saturday.

The Crimson Tide tasted defeat in Columbia last Saturday for the first time since their loss to Utah in the Sugar Bowl of 2008 as well as look to let some of their frustration out on Ole Miss in Tuscaloosa this Saturday.

The Sooners will look to get their offense on track after a week off as they welcome Iowa State to Norman after some poor showings this season against teams that should have been blown out by DeMarco Murray and the Oklahoma offense in 2010.

With the Alabama loss, the potential of a BCS title game run has a new breath of life this week as the Broncos will try to impress voters as they face the Spartans of San Jose State on Saturday.

This Week: vs. Brigham Young

Andy Dalton and the Horned Frogs will welcome BYU to Fort Worth as TCU will continue their path to yet another undefeated season with a showdown with other Mountain West conference unbeaten Air Force at home on October 23^rd.

4: Auburn 6-0 (3-0 SEC West)

Previous Week: W vs. Kentucky 37-24

This Week: vs. No. 12 Arkansas

The two higher powered offenses of the SEC West will meet in Auburn this weekend as Ryan Mallet and Cam Newton square off in this battle of marquee quarterbacks in the SEC.

3: Nebraska 5-0 (1-0 Big 12 North)

Previous Week: W vs. Kansas State 48-13

This Week: vs. Texas, Saturday

The Cornhuskers will welcome the reeling Longhorns to Lincoln as the Big 12 is becoming much clearer week by week as it seems Nebraska and Oklahoma are destined to meet in the Big 12 Championship game in December.

2: Ohio State 6-0 (2-0 Big Ten)

Previous Week: W vs. Indiana 38-10

This Week:  At No. 18 Wisconsin, Saturday

The Buckeyes will travel to Madison in the biggest game of Ohio State’s Big Ten conference schedule this season after Terrelle Pryor threw for more than 340 yards on Saturday against Indiana in Columbus.

The Ducks will have the week off this weekend which will play well in Eugene as starter Darron Thomas went down to injury last weekend against Washington State until their matchup with UCLA on October 21^st.
