Cleveland Browns By the Numbers: Jake Delhomme Is Not the Answer

Daniel WolfOct 10, 2010

The Cleveland Browns announced that Seneca Wallace would be the starter in Week 5 a few hours prior to today's game at Cleveland Browns Stadium versus the Atlanta Falcons.

Riding high off a win against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Browns were looking to string together two wins in a row, but penalties, bad plays, a lack of a running game, and many other things led to the Browns losing their fourth game this season.

Now sitting at 1-4 and in the bottom of the AFC North, many fans are beginning to talk quarterback controversy after Wallace left the Falcons game with an ankle injury and substitute Jake Delhomme was a non-factor.

Delhomme had a fantastic preseason with a passer rating over 100 and zero interceptions, but it was only the preseason, period.

In Week 1, Delhomme hurt his ankle and played subpar football, and Wallace came in to spell him.

Wallace has played solid football for three-and-a-half weeks, keeping the Browns competitive and in games each week.

He even left the Falcons game with the Browns in front 7-6 just before halftime.

The severity of Wallace's ankle injury did not seem to be that bad when he was shown on the Browns sideline in the midst of Delhomme struggling to play and lead the offense.

Delhomme was visually distraught and confused when shown in a close up with the cameras on television.

At the same time, Wallace looked angry and agitated, while waiting to get back into the game and lead the offense.

Is this the beginning of another Cleveland quarterback controversy?

Possibly, seeing as how Delhomme's numbers are Derek Anderson/Brady Quinn like in his limited playing time.

Delhomme has thrown four interceptions in pretty much six quarters of football and has a quarterback rating of 48.2 while completing only 55 percent of his passes attempted.

Not the type of numbers that Browns Team President Mike Holmgren envisioned.

But then Delhomme's backup has stepped in and done exactly what a backup quarterback is supposed to do, plus more.

Wallace looks like he is making his case to remain the starter for the remainder of this season barring injury with not only his abilities and play, but his stats too.

Wallace has a quarterback rating of 88.5 with a 63 percent completion percentage, four touchdowns, and only two interceptions.

The numbers never lie. So why wasn't Wallace put back into the Falcons game?

Well. none of us were on the sideline and knew the true extent of Wallace's injury, but let's all be honest in saying that if a head coach is supposed to makes decisions that are what's best for his team to win, then Eric Mangini should have brought Wallace back into the game.

Even though he has only played just about four quarters of football, Delhomme is obviously not the answer at quarterback whereas Wallace is right now.
