Randy Moss Trade and Michael Vick Hurt: Week 5 NFL Storylines To Watch
Just when you think you know the answers, the NFL changes the question. Randy Moss was traded and Michael Vick will be sidelined this week.
Those two stories are just the tip of the iceberg as Week 5 of the NFL inches closer.
Week 5 also features players returning from suspension, the last undefeated team playing one of the league's elite quarterbacks, and much, much, more.
If you like drama, this is probably the best week yet, so let's see what's in store.
*Bonus gold star to the first person who recognizes where I paraphrased the opening line to this column from.
Randy Moss All Day, Randy Moss All Night
1 of 7
If you follow the NFL, then Wednesday officially became Randy Moss day on the Internet until Roy Halladay threw the no-hitter, but that's life on the Internet.
So here's a picture of Brad Childress talking about Randy Moss for you to enjoy.
Vikings quarterback Brett Favre needs a true No. 1 wide receiver and Moss fills that need. He's proven time and again he can be the featured receiver every team wants.
Plus, the Vikings play the Jets, whom Moss just played a few weeks ago, and the Jets aren't keen on seeing Moss again so soon.
That should be a very good game.
Michael Vick's Rib Injury
2 of 7
Michael Vick didn't injure his throwing arm or his legs, so the Eagles and Vick got off lucky. However, Vick is out this week, meaning Kevin Kolb gets the start.
There's no need to recap the implications of Kolb's performance except to say he either does great and Andy Reid has a quarterback controversy, or he does poorly and his trade value drops.
Brian Cushing Returns
3 of 7
Seven players came off league suspensions this week, among them is Texans OLB Brian Cushing.
Cushing was suspended for a positive PED test, but he denies guilt in the matter.
In any event, he was suspended and now he's back with a Texans team that already has beaten the Colts and with a defense ranked dead last overall.
Considering how the Texans have played so far this year, that ranking really is a surprise, but Cushing's return ought to help that defense rise up in the standings.
Max Hall's New Job
4 of 7
Undrafted rookie quarterback Max Hall now is the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals.
In 10 months, the Cardinals went from starting a future Hall of Famer, to giving a former first-round draft pick his umpteenth try at the position, to a former Pro Bowl quarterback who can't turn in a consistent performance to an undrafted rookie.
Quite a journey.
Good luck, Mr. Hall.
The San Francisco 49ers
5 of 7
The flipside of the Eagles/49ers game is the drama surrounding the future of Mike Singletary, whose hot seat is scorching at the moment.
The 49ers are 0-4 even though they've played both the Falcons and the Saints close. Singletary can't seem to put all the pieces together and quarterback Alex Smith hasn't exactly helped by continually turning the ball over.
Should the Niners lose this week, it could be the end of Singletary's time in San Francisco.
Can the Lions Win a Game?
6 of 7
The No. 1 and No. 2 teams face each other this weekend.
(Well, the No. 1 and No. 2 teams from the 2010 NFL Draft.)
The Rams already have won two games while the Lions had one win stolen from them and fell short last week.
In the battle of the Rebuilds, and Matthew Stafford still sidelined, can the Lions put one in the win column?
The Kansas City Chiefs
7 of 7
The undefeated Kansas City Chiefs play the Indianapolis Colts.
Can the Chiefs remain undefeated facing a Colts team that already has lost twice this year?
If Tony Dungy still was the Colts coach, the answer probably would be "no."
But Jim Caldwell is the coach, and Caldwell has a lot of improving to do before he's even close to the coach Dungy is.
The Chiefs have the two best coordinators in the game on their sideline and Matt Cassel is a pretty good quarterback.
It's going to be one heck of a game.
