With an Undisciplined Cowboys Team on Deck, Will the Titans Win the Penalty War?

Jason HenryOct 6, 2010

Before the raucous caused by the Randy Moss trade to Minnesota today, the big news over the weekend was the “dirty” play of the Tennessee Titans. Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton called them dirty and his head coach, Josh McDaniel’s, echoed the sentiment.

A couple of weeks ago when the Titans paid a visit to the New York Giants in the meadowlands, the Giants fell apart amassing a deafening amount of personal foul penalties and self destructing in front of the NFL cameras.

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin reportedly told his guys that Titans head coach, Jeff Fisher’s teams would try their hardest to get under your skin and provoke you. He told his team not to fall for it, but they did anyway. The Giants were destroyed 29-10 and Coughlin supposedly had a certifiable crisis on his hands.

Now the Titans and their tough guy act face off against the Dallas Cowboys.

Dallas is notorious for committing stupid penalties and making bonehead mistakes. Last season, it was Flozell Adams and his kicking routine. This year, it's  Alex Barron and his WWE finisher move on Redskins defensive line, Brian Orakpo.

Who will be the culprit this week?

The Cowboys are the 11th most penalized team in the league, averaging about 60 penalty yards per game. That comes from holding, personal fouls, pass interference, and other miscalculated errors.

If the Titans compound that number for the ‘Boys come Sunday, then there may be a problem come Monday morning.

If anything, the Cowboys should have learned a valuable lesson these past two weeks watching the Titans battle with the Giants and the Broncos. Tom and Kyle have warned them, but will they pay attention?

ESPN’s first take’s Skip Bayless says that the Cowboys play their best football when they are being outwardly criticized. This week many of the people who jumped off the Cowboys bandwagon, hopped right back on after their victory over the Texans.

Is that a bad omen for a team with such a fragile psyche? Can the Titans crawl under the skin of a Cowboys team desperate to even their record to 2-2?

Better yet, should Dallas worry more about the legs of Chris Johnson than being mentally outdone by a “dirty” football team? Also, the Titans lead the league in penalty yards with 86 per game, so can the Cowboys turn the tables on Tennessee?

If the Cowboys are viable Super Bowl threat, are we supposed to have so many unanswered questions about them?

I guess we’ll find out this Sunday.
