Randy Moss Trade: 10 Reasons It Will Ruin the Vikings' Playoff Hopes
With multiple outlets reporting that the Randy Moss to Minnesota trade is now official, it's time to take a look at how this affects the Vikings and their struggles to start the season.
I don't think this trade is as great as people are making it out to be. Moss has been a troublemaker one way or another wherever he's gone in his career, and his presence is going to cause problems in that locker room by his doing or not.
Inside are 10 ways that Randy Moss will sink what's left of Minnesota's playoff hopes.
No. 10: Past History
1 of 10
We've all seen this story before, and we know how it ends.
Randy Moss had an awful relationship with management and ended up leaving for Oakland in an ugly divorce that ripped the team apart.
While this seems like a great situation, you need to remember that Moss and the Vikings have had major issues before, and there's plenty of room for there to be future problems between the two sides.
These two sides don't like each other, but I'm sure they'll pretend to for the cameras.
No. 9: Moss and Adversity
2 of 10
When the going gets tough, Randy Moss usually gets going.
If Randy Moss isn't winning, he's going to cause issues; it's inevitable. Now media reports are coming out that Moss was causing more problems behind the scenes in New England than anyone knew about. Moss is a troublemaker, and that will never change, no matter what.
If this marriage doesn't work out, it's going to get ugly in Minnesota.
No. 8: Too Many Egos
3 of 10
There's a lot of players who are going to want attention, and now with Randy Moss everyone is taking another step back.
The Vikings already did this for Brett Favre, and now they have to do it for Moss. Something's eventually got to give in Minnesota. Athletes have a ton of pride, and when they feel they're overlooked, it gets ugly. While it may never come to the surface, it could rip the team apart internally.
Putting a ton of big egos in one room is never a recipe for success.
No. 7: Favre Focuses on Moss
4 of 10
With the struggles of the Vikings' wideouts, I don't think it's a reach to imagine Brett Favre trying to light up the scoreboard and just key on Randy Moss all day.
Favre will try to force it down the field to Moss, and it's going to backfire.
Favre has struggled this year, and it's because he's tried to make too much happen under center. Adding Moss gives him a great weapon if he uses him right.
However, don't count on Favre being smart about when he throws to Randy Moss.
No. 6: No Chemistry
5 of 10
A major issue with the Vikings this year has been the fact that Brett Favre and his wideouts have no chemistry with one another.
Favre spent extra time at practice earlier this year to try to get on the same page with his receivers, and now he's going to have to spend more to try to work Randy Moss in. Chemistry is the most important thing in sports, and Minnesota doesn't have it.
Don't assume this is going to work from day one.
No. 5: Favre Throws More
6 of 10
One of the problems in Minnesota, at least from what I've seen of the Vikings, is that Minnesota hasn't run the ball enough.
In every game, the Vikings have thrown the ball more than they've run it, and while some of that has to do with constantly being behind in these games, I think there has to be more of a dedication to the run. Adrian Peterson has been wildly successful this year, and more touches never hurt.
But now I think that with Moss in town, the Vikings are going to try to throw it over and over again, and it's just not going to work.
No. 4: Another Distraction
7 of 10
The Vikings for the better part of almost two years have had to deal with nothing but distractions, and now with Randy Moss coming to town, it's yet another circus Minnesota has to deal with.
There's going to be even more media around asking more questions about the situation, and every player is going to get tired of it the way they did when Brett Favre waffled on his retirement the past two years. If the Vikings can't focus on football, it's a recipe for disaster.
Minnesota might as well play in a three-ring circus.
No. 3: Too Many Receivers
8 of 10
There's only one football, and you can only spread it around so much, but now the Vikings have a massive logjam at the receiver position. When Sidney Rice gets back, it's going to make it more of an issue.
This is the second wideout the Vikings have traded for with Greg Camarillo being added right before the season. You'd think that having too many targets to throw to would be a good thing, but it's just a golden opportunity for there to be issues in the locker room.
Give it a few weeks, and I'm sure someone will be upset about a lack of touches.
No. 2: More Expectations
9 of 10
If you thought it was Super Bowl or bust before Randy Moss showed up for the Vikings, wait until he puts that jersey back on and takes the field.
The Vikings' front office has thrown everything but the kitchen sink at this team trying to get a championship, and anything less is a total disappointment in the eyes of management and the fans. The expectations are going to be through the roof for the rest of the year.
I'm not sure that Minnesota will get to the Super Bowl even with Moss, and that pressure is something I think will make any issues in that locker room worse.
No. 1: Contract Dispute
10 of 10
The Vikings are trading for Randy Moss without inking him to any form of contract extension but will try to work on a deal after the fact.
That's a recipe for disaster.
Moss has a history of running his mouth when he's not happy, as recently as this year when he wouldn't shut up about his contract. A change of scenery won't change things, and if Minnesota doesn't get him signed quickly, it could get worse and could divide the locker room.
Moss isn't what you'd call a model teammate, and he'll show you that if you give him the chance.
