Arizona State Sun Devils Football: Is It Time for a Quarterback Change in Tempe?

After a 31-28 loss to Oregon State, ASU Head Coach Dennis Erickson said he would consider making changes on defense prior to next Saturday’s game at Washington. 

While changes on the defense may be necessary, Erickson should consider making changes at quarterback.

In the last two weeks, Steven Threet has thrown seven interceptions. He has now thrown 10 interceptions on the season compared to only nine touchdowns.

Among the 120 FBS teams, only Buffalo, with 12, has thrown more interceptions than Arizona State. Bowling Green and Louisiana Tech have also thrown ten.

The Sun Devils also rank 111^th out of the 120 FBS teams in red-zone efficiency. Threet may not be the sole reason for these redzone struggles, but he is certainly a big part of them.

Threet was impressive in the first three weeks of the season and had Sun Devil fans excited and optimistic about his talent and leadership. The past two weeks, however, have been different and have left fans wondering what happened to Threet and how soon sophomore Brock Osweiler will be lining up with the starting offense.

Osweiler, who was in a battle for the starting quarterback job with Threet for all of the spring and summer, played sparingly in the team’s first two games. Osweiler has completed seven of 13 passes for 75 yards so far this season.

In six games last year, Osweiler threw for 249 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. While those numbers may not be impressive, Osweiler deserves to start next week.

Although, the struggles of the ASU offense cannot be blamed entirely on Threet, the quarterback often takes the brunt of the blame. Changes need to be made and Threet’s poor decision-making and inefficiency in the redzone make him a prime candidate to be benched.
