2011 College Football Recruiting: The 10 Worst Classes in the BCS Conferences

Michael PintoOct 4, 2010

A couple of months ago we gave you a list of the worst 2011 recruiting classes in the BCS series conferences, and with the summer in wraps it's time to revisit the discussion with updated rankings.

Most of our focus throughout the year will be on the best, but on occasion we like to flip the rock over and see what's hiding underneath.

Here are the worst recruiting classes from the SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-10, ACC, and Big East.

10. Wake Forest

1 of 10

Commitments: Nine

Wake Forest's class looks like a gem compared to the compilation of talent most of the other schools on this list have put together.

Of the Demon Deacons' nine commitments, seven have received a 3-star grade, while the other two rate out as 2-star prospects.

9. Kansas State

2 of 10

Commitments: 13

Kansas State's class has six 3-star prospects, five 2-star prospects, and a pair of unrated prospects.

Quarterback Daniel Sams, ranked No. 66 at his position, is the highest ranked recruit in the class, followed by defensive end Marquel Bryant, who's ranked 71st at his position.

8. Vanderbilt

3 of 10

Commitments: Eight

Vanderbilt has picked up five commitments since August 25 to help its situation, but the Commodores are still way behind the rest of the pack in the SEC, as usual.

Right now Vanderbilt's class ranks outside of the top 75, with four of their commitments receiving 3-star grades and the other four with 2-star grades.

7. Arizona State

4 of 10

Commitments: Seven

The Sun Devils had a couple of September commitments to bolster their ranking, but Arizona State is still a long way off when it comes to 2011 recruiting.

Of its seven commitments, Arizona State doesn't have a single commitment ranked in the top 50 at his position; only quarterback Michael Bercovici ranks in the top 60.

6. Syracuse

5 of 10

Commitments: 16

Syracuse and Kansas State are the schools on the list who have double-digit commitments, but that doesn't make the Orange's class much better on paper.

Of its 16 recruits, only three have received a 3-star grade, while seven remain unranked. Running back Tyree Smallwood, ranked outside the top 80 at his position, is the best prospect Syracuse has right now.

5. Iowa State

6 of 10

Commitments: Eight

The Cyclones didn't have a single recruit on the books until very late in the spring, and half of their class committed after the start of August.

When you have only eight prospects, that isn't a good sign, especially when only three have received a 3-star grade.

4. Purdue

7 of 10

Commitments: Six

Purdue and Penn State are in a close race for the worst 2011 class in the Big Ten, though the Nittany Lions at least have a couple of 4-star recruits while the Boilermakers have none.

Purdue ranks at No. 70 at the moment, with no commits since July 1. Except for tight end Robert Kugler, all of its recruits rank outside the top 50 at their positions.

3. Colorado

8 of 10

Commitments: Four

The Buffaloes probably can't wait for their move to the Pac-10, where more alumni and support will be a welcome change from the Big 12.

With only four commitments for 2011, Colorado is barely recruiting its way into the top 100 for the year.

2. Connecticut

9 of 10

Commitments: Nine

Connecticut has nine commitments for 2011, but where it has quantity there is a noticeable lack of quality.

Almost all of the Huskies' recruits are ranked outside of the top 100 at their positions, with only safety Wilbert Lee and quarterback Michael Nebrich ranking in the top 85.

1. N.C. State

10 of 10

Commitments: Eight

While N.C. State has found unexpected success on the football field in 2010, it hasn't really added up on the recruiting front.

The Wolfpack has just eight commitments for 2011, and none of them have received higher than a 2-star grade. Add in the fact that one of their recruits is a kicker and another is a long snapper, and there's not a whole lot to like.
