Penn State Football: JoePa Must Go So Lions Can Finally Defeat Iowa

Dave DeBlasioOct 3, 2010

It's a good thing Joe Paterno didn't have a lot of opponents like Iowa as he was trying to pad his lead in the race to become the all-time winningest coach.

Temple, Youngstown State, Eastern Michigan, Akron—now those are the kind of opponents Paterno thrives on.

The Pitt-Penn State series would still be going on if the Panthers hadn't blanked Penn State in their final meeting in 2000.

The failure to beat Iowa—losses stacking up now equal just about a decade, are Paterno's fault.

He can't claim the glory if he won't face up to his failures.

Paterno's failures against Iowas are so egregious it's impossible to imagine Ohio State or Michigan tolerating a coach who lost eight straight games to a Big Ten opponent. Just wouldn't happen.

But there he was last night on the sidelines, looking chilled in the 49 degree temperature and pretty much clueless.

Even if he is just the team's mascot, he still takes the blame for the loss.

Gear down, Penn State fans, you've got more losses on the way. The 2010 season won't be like the best since 2005 when Penn State beat everyone they should and just losses the big contests.

And it doesn't bother Penn State fans that your head coach, the most experienced coach the college football world will ever see, hasn't pulled it all together in sixteen seasons?

The Iowa loss in 2008 might have been a fluke, but the pounding USC administered in another game where Paterno was totally clueless was not.

Paterno's team lost to Iowa for the eighth time in nine tries.

Paterno hanging on is an ego-thing, nothing more.

No doubt he feels as though he's got to have control of something especially since he has zero clout in Delany's big buck Big Ten. Paterno's one request to add an Eastern team wasn't even pursued!

Delany must love to rub Paterno's face in it.

The odds have already been posted for the 2011 Iowa-Penn State game. It's Penn State  plus 10.
