Boise State: What Would Happen If They Played in The SEC or BIG TEN? PART 1

Saif AliOct 3, 2010

I don't know about you, but I am getting sick and tired of Boise State's supporters, and their perpetual whining about their lack of national respect.  Simply put, its pathetic.  They (barely) knocked off a Virginia Tech team that came in to the season far to overrated.  They followed up by beating an Oregon State team that got beat by TCU in week one, and barley pulled on off a win against a second rate Louisville squad.

To Boise State fans - Congratulations! You defeated a pair of second rate teams - from second tier conferences**.  Oh, and lets not forget to mention the victories over powerhouses Wyoming and New Mexico State.

**Sorry PAC-10 fans, but once USC got sanctioned the Oregon Ducks are all you have left.  As  for Stanford, they are the Notre Dame of the West Coast - overrated media darlings.      Remember Brady Quinn? In about 2 years i`ll be asking if you remember Andrew Luck.

So... Boise State, you still think you deserve that #1 or #2?

Well, how about we try something new. Lets see how your beloved Broncos would fare playing in a SEC and/or a BIG TEN schedule.  And what better schedules to stick you in to than those of the;

  • #1 Alabama Crimson Tide  -  in part 1
  • #2 THE Ohio State Buckeyes - in part 2

NOTE: all games are theoretically at neutral sites - i`m tired of hearing about the blue turf.

SCHEDULE NUMBER #1 - THE ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE

Game #1 : San Jose State

Honestly, this was a tune up game for the Tide - and it would be for most other teams in the country.

Boise State 42   -   San Jose State 10

Game #2 : Penn State

Alabama handled them quite easily, capitalizing on the mistakes and inexperience of their Freshman QB. --- It is likely Boise State would do the same, but not as easily.  While their offense may have been stagnant, they Penn State defense would fare much better against the one dimensional Broncos.

Boise State 17  -  Penn State 9

Game #3 : Duke

See game #1

Game #4  : Arkansas

This one went down to the wire.  Ryan Mallet is a premier college QB with good, but not great wide receivers. They simply didn't cut it against Alabama. The Tide pressured Mallet in to forcing some throws for interceptions, which ultimately won them the game. --- These good Arkansas wide outs would look great against Boise State.  The Bronco defense would simply be manhandled by the Razorbacks physical style of play, and get absolutely shredded by Ryan Mallet.

Arkansas 44  -  Boise State 19

Game #6 : Florida

Alabama handled the gators nicely.  Florida employs a similar one dimensional style of spread offense to that of the Broncos.  But, they don't have a 6'3 245 pound QB with 4.5 speed, running their offense any more. -- I`ll give this one to Boise State, as a once in a lifetime (see Oklahoma) type deal.  Florida is young, and relatively inexperienced.

Boise State 21  -  Florida 18

Game #6 : South Carolina

I honestly think South Carolina is an ACC school at heart; lost amongst the big boys of the SEC.  They are an average an best team in the SEC, and could be quite the overachievers in the ACC.  But that's another topic, for another day. -- Chalk one up for the Broncos

Boise State 28  - South Carolina 13

Game #7 : Mississippi (Ole Miss)

When Jevan Snead took off for the NFL, he must have seen something we didn't.  Maybe he thought there was no way that he could win with this team, and he would rather take his chances in the NFL. Well his decision clearly backfired.  Currently, the thief/pothead former Oregon QB, who was at one a time a mentioned as Heisman Trophy Candidate, cant get the job done either. -- Boise wins easily.

Boise State 41  -  Mississippi 24

Game #8 : Tennessee

Its been a rough year for the Vols.  Lane Kiffin stirred up controversy and then bolted for USC - and took a few of his prize recruits with him.  Tennessee will probably be competitive again once they get stabilized at the coaching position.  But unfortunately the Vols aren't there yet. --- The Volunteers fail to convert a last second field goal to send it in to overtime, and the Broncos barely escape with a win.

Boise State 24 - Tennessee 21

Game #9 : LSU

LSU is too big, fast and strong for the Broncos to handle.  The combination of the dual threat QB Jordan Jefferson and WR Terrance Tolliver would be too much for the Broncos to handle. Not to mention CB Patrick Peterson who's excellent play would cut the field in in half. --- BSU cant match up athletically with LSU, and suffers their worst defeat of the season.

LSU 41  -  Boise State 6

Game #10 : Mississippi State

The Bulldogs have overtaken the Rebels for title of best team in Mississippi.  That is about all the progress they have made.  Its hard to sell recruits on the glamours of going to school in Starkville, Mississippi when Tuscaloosa (Alabama Crimson Tide) is right down the road - and schools that pose a more attractive option for mid tier recruits like Memphis and UAB are close by. But I digress. -- Boise State takes this one.

Boise State 33  -  Mississippi State 10

Game 11 :  Georgia State

Apparently Georgia State is a new D-1AA (I refuse to call it by the new name) team that started play this season.  I suppose after the brutal SEC schedule, Bama' decided they deserved a week off.  I guess playing an unproven D-1AA team that's mainly composed of recent high school graduates is a way to relax? --- Boise state runs up the score, in hopes that the nation will notice them again.

Boise State 77  -  Georgia State 0

Game 12 : Auburn

Auburn has looked pretty good so far.  Their only real challenge was Clemson, who is what I refer as the Notre Dame of the South.  The Tigers are a well rounded squad - and play some pretty solid football. --  Boise plays well, but Auburn plays better.

Auburn 27  -  Boise State 20

So... there we have it.

Conclusion

  • Boise State finishes the season with a record of 9 - 3.
  • No SEC championship
  • No BCS National Championship.
  • No BCS Bowl Game Bids
  • Season End Ranking : #9

Final Thoughts....

Boise State is a good team, but elite they are not.  If you place this current team in one of the toughest conferences in the country (SEC) - I think they would fare very well.  However, once they have to go up against the traditional powers, that are stacked with athletes from top to bottom; is when the Bronco's will start to face some uphill battles.

The injuries would be far more common - and the normal wear and tear from the season would be much more noticeable. The Broncos would not have the luxury of resting their starters after half time or the 3rd Quarter on a weekly basis.

Alright everyone, thanks for reading.  I look forward to your feedback.

God Bless.
