Cleveland Browns By the Numbers: Welcome to the Offense Chansi Stuckey

Daniel WolfOct 3, 2010

The Cleveland Browns faced the Cincinnati Bengals, who came into Cleveland Browns Stadium trying to jump start their offensive passing attack.

The Bengals succeeded, but they also lost to the Browns, who won their first game of  2010.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the Browns is the fact they have no real threat at wide receiver. The opening day starters at receiver have a combined total of six catches through four games.

Both second year receivers, Brian Robiskie and Mohammed Massaquoi have appeared to regress at the position this year, but it could also be due to the fact they played on the first team offense with injured quarterback Jake Delhomme and they do not have the same rapport with current starter Seneca Wallace.

Regardless of the reasons that answer the question as to why both Massaquoi and Robiskie are not playing well, one receiver stepped up his game in Week 4 that should garner more looks and passes moving forward.

Chansi Stuckey caught five passes for 56 yards against the Bengals, nearly equaling the total of both Massaquoi and Robiskie this season.

Acquired in the Braylon Edwards trade during the 2009 season, Stuckey is a small and fast receiver that excels from the slot, but against the Bengals he was lined up in many different places on the field.

Why not play Stuckey more at receiver if he and Josh Cribbs are the only receivers who can get open to catch passes?

That is a question for head coach Eric Mangini to answer, who needs to figure out what is best for his offense in order to have a chance to throw downfield and alleviate the pressure that is slowly mounting on running back Peyton Hillis's shoulders to carry the weight of the offense.

With both Robiskie and rookie receiver Carlton Mitchell inactive the past two weeks, the Browns do not have much depth at the position unless the play of newly acquired Sam Aiken, who did catch a pass against the Bengals, improves.

If another receiver cannot step up, then look for more passes to tight ends Ben Watson and Evan Moore to make up for the lack of talent at receiver.

Perhaps when Mitchell is healthy, he may see more playing time, but until that happens look for passes to go in the direction of those who have been consistently catching the ball through the first four games of the season.
