Georgia Bulldogs Football: Colorado Buffaloes to Know for Saturday
No one could have predicted this at the beginning of the 2010 college football season, but after a 1-3 record to start the year, a couple major storylines have developed.
Is Mark Richt really on the hot seat? It seems as though he is and a loss this week could do irreparable harm to his chances of remaining the head coach.
Will A.J. Green make a big difference? We'll have a chance to find out this week as he takes the field for the first time this year.
Can the Bulldogs come together as a team and bounce back after three straight losses? That's the most important question of all.
Colorado is by no means an elite football team, so the Dawgs should have a great chance to get the win total to two.
Read on to find out who the key players on the Colorado squad will be.
Tyler Hansen
1 of 5
Last Week:
31-13 win over the Hawaii Warriors
19/26, 200 yards, 2 touchdowns, 0 interceptions
5 carries, 21 yards
This Season:
54/85, 558 yards, 4 touchdowns, 4 interceptions
24 carries, 14 yards, 2 touchdowns
The Reaction:
Hansen, the quarterback for the Buffaloes, has not been too great this season, but he has taken every offensive snap for his team.
He's coming off of an efficient performance against Hawaii, but he's still thrown just as many interceptions as touchdowns.
The quarterback's main problem is holding onto the ball for far too long. In just three games he's taken eight sacks despite a pretty decent offensive line. Georgia's front seven should be able to have a field day and break their streak of two straight games without a sack.
Rodney Stewart
2 of 5
Last Week:
31-13 win over the Hawaii Warriors
22 carries, 106 yards, 2 touchdowns
2 receptions, 9 yards
This Season:
67 carries, 253 yards, 2 touchdowns
4 receptions, 50 yards
The Reaction:
Rodney Stewart is the Colorado Buffaloes' main running back now and he didn't disappoint last week, exploding for 106 yards and his only two touchdowns of the season.
However, when you look at his season at a whole, it's significantly less impressive.
Stewart is rushing for just 3.8 yards a game and should be one of the worst starting running backs that the Bulldogs have faced to this point in the season.
On the other hand, the Georgia defense will be the best that Colorado has faced. If Stewart has struggled against Colorado Sate and California, he should again against Georgia.
Scotty McKnight and Toney Clemons
3 of 5
Last Week:
31-13 win over the Hawaii Warriors
Scotty McKnight: 6 receptions, 65 yards, 1 touchdown
Toney Clemons: 3 receptions, 85 yards, 1 touchdown
This Season:
Scotty McKnight: 14 catches, 157 yards, 2 touchdowns
Toney Clemons: 9 receptions, 146 yards, 1 touchdown
The Reaction:
Toney Clemons and Scotty McKnight are the top two wide receivers for the Colorado Buffaloes, but they're far from the A.J. Green/Kris Durham level.
They're both going to be tough to cover, but the Georgia secondary should be up for the task. Clemons, a junior who transferred from Michigan, is probably the more difficult cover of the two.
They're both coming off of their most productive games of the season, but it probably won't be enough to create a dominant passing attack against Georgia.
Nick Kasa
4 of 5
The 6'7" sophomore is a large defensive end, weighing a solid 270 pounds. He and the other three returning starter on the defensive line have been great at shutting down their opponents' running games thus far.
The unit only allowed 59 yards to California's Shane Vereen last week and the Bulldogs haven't exactly been great at running the ball.
In fact, the Georgia running game is ranked just 86th in the country, averaging only 3.6 yards per carry thus far.
The reason that Kasa is the player to know from the line is the ability he has to get to the quarterback. If he uses his size and strength against the Bulldogs' porous offensive line, he could easily record a sack or two against Murray, who has been prone to holding onto the ball for too long.
Jimmy Smith and Jalil Brown
5 of 5
Jimmy Smith and Jalil Brown are the best members of the Colorado secondary and they'll have the pleasure of attempting to guard A.J. Green this week.
Although they aren't statistically great, both Smith and Brown are big cornerbacks. Smith stands at 6'2", 210 pounds while Brown is slightly smaller at 6'1", 205 pounds.
They are both in their final collegiate seasons and bring plenty of experience to the table.
Bulldogs fans hope that they see these players chasing after Green on a long touchdown reception multiple times throughout the day. That could definitely happen, but Smith and Brown will definitely make it tough for him to do so.
