Nick Saban Is Home! Why The Coach Will Retire In Tuscaloosa.

Brandon JohnsonSep 27, 2010

I read an article a couple months ago that struck a nerve. Before now I have never written an article on B/R. However, I could not let this go, how could someone write an article on Coach Saban leaving? Not only does it jinx us, but I started reeling off the reasons he will stay to my wife who doesn’t really care. I was thinking there had to be someone out there that will listen. I realized that there was a site that I was constantly on where the Alabama Nation will hear my cries. You may not agree with me, but who cares? I am able to get this off my chest and you can decide who is right.

                Reasons Coach Saban would leave:

  • He loves to take failing programs and make them national powers again.
  • Most people will do anything for enough money. If another University offered him enough to rebuild their program.
  • Problems with the University are always enough to drive a coach away. I guess I could imagine a dumb enough athletic director could get voted into office… umm, I mean hired. Sorry, I started thinking about something else.
  • He has a medical issue that makes him take time off. I could live with that, however I do not think that he will be gone long. He definitely won’t set a SEC record for shortest retirement, but he would come back.

Those are all of the possible reasons I could imagine for him to leave. However, I only believe one or two of those could actually happen.

Why he will stay:

Nick Saban is the hardest working man in football, that I know of. He lives and breathes football and is always focusing on how to get better. When people say that he is a God in Alabama is not far off. Nick Saban is in Heaven right now, he has a fan base that thinks football is important as he does. We are the Alabama Nation and he is the King. We have bought into the  program that he teaches and follow it like a religion.

  • The Fans: Alabama has one of the most loyal fan bases in all of college football. To fill a 90,000 seat stadium that has been sold out consecutively since 1988. As long as we are winning football games we will do what Coach Saban asks of us. Although, Tide fans have been faithful through tough times, there is a lot to be fan of these days. All around Alabama you will see people who have never watched a down of football in their lives sporting their Crimson Tide gear. They have also learned to boo the pussy-cats three hours south.
  • The University: Alabama has found its diamond in the rough. I don’t believe anyone thought that Nick Saban was THIS good. I don’t see him leaving for any other university because he can get all the money/support that he wants right here. Alabama won’t let him get away if it is just about money. Nick Saban also has another rare opportunity in Tuscaloosa. Mal Moore and the rest of the University  staff are all dedicated to making the football program the best in the nation. In short, what Saban wants, Saban gets.
  • The Recruiting: Alabama has become a hotbed for recruiting. We have top recruits from all over the nation sending Coach Saban their highlight tapes in hope of catching his eyes. With Coach Saban on board, Alabama has become known for developing top talent into top NFL talent. It will come down to the last recruit to commit before we know who has the #1 class. However, looking at the only school ahead of us, Texas, it should be Alabama that takes it home on National Signing Day. They have signed most of their recruits already at 23, and only have one five star commit in Malcom Brown. Nick Saban has already brought in 2, 5 star talents with Brent Calloway and Hasean Clinton-Dix. The only reason Texas still holds the lead is because they have 5 more 4 star recruits. Texas is done unless they think they could grab another top talent. However, Coach Saban is not done. Alabama is still at the top a lot of the nation’s top talent.
  • The Job: Nick Saban has had the same program and process for several years. He has tried to instill it for several teams. Why is it working now? He has finally found not only a team or a university that has bought into his program but a whole state. I can’t say for sure, but I am convinced the reason he left the NFL to coach College football is because he could not get anyone to buy 100% into his program. I believe it is common knowledge that any professional that has already proved them self will not work as hard as someone who is in a fierce competition to have a chance at the top. I am not saying that all NFL players are slowing down and play as hard as their competition is instead of blowing them away. Look for the offense/defense that can make big plays when it needs to, but doesn’t blow the team away.

It is time for Nick Saban to settle down, stop hopping from school to school. He is going to make his home in the same place that he is building his dynasty. Look for Coach Saban to be our coach for a long time. Until he starts getting referred to Joe Paterno or Bobby Bowden. I guarantee the longer he stays the more his name will draw reference to Paul “Bear” Bryant… The greatest coach of all time… for now.
