The Michael Vick of the NBA: 10 NBA Players Who Most Deserve a Second Chance

Danny DukkerSep 27, 2010

Some guys deserve a second chance.

Take Michael Vick for example:

He is a great quarterback who for some reasons felt like killing dogs and betting on it. However, now he is back and he looks better than ever. So, after serving jail time for killing cute innocent puppies (I don't even hate the guy, this is just too easy) he got his second chance.

What about NBA players who also have screwed up along the way? Shouldn't they get a second chance?

Yes, and here is the countdown.

10. Andre Iguodala

1 of 10

After Allen Iverson left the Philadelphia 76ers, Iguodala was charged with carrying the team. Some felt he was up to it, some didn't.

Well years later it seems the critics were right. Iguodala has shown very little improvement and the Sixers have successfully fallen out of being relevant in the East. After making the playoffs for two straight years and having back to back 40 win seasons—the Sixers accumulated a total of 27 wins last year.

Throughout this big decline, Iguodala was all but run out of town. Fans screamed for him to be traded, but the Sixers stood by him (largely due to the fact that all the offers including him were declined).

However, Iguodala now has the perfect chance to show people what he can do. This is his second chance after almost being traded last season.

Let's see what he is made of...

9. Hedo Turkoglu

2 of 10

This is the perfect example of one single year ruining a player's entire reputation. He went from being one of the stars in Orlando and a fan favorite to a stuck up underachiever in Toronto.

While I cannot blame him for being upset about playing in Toronto, I still think the way he acted (or at least how people said he was acting) was wrong.

In Orlando he was the Magic go-to man who was touted as a great scorer and a great passing big man.

As soon as he arrived in Toronto he was condemned as a bad rebounder and a lousy defender.

Well now that he is in Phoenix and has the perfect chance to redeem himself, and help lead the Suns to another great season opposing all the critics.

Let's see if he can do it...

8.Tyson Chandler

3 of 10

The look in the picture summarizes Chandler's entire time with the Hornets and for that matter, his time with the Bulls, the Bobcats and OKC.

He was the second overall pick in a relatively decent draft, and has he choked big time.

After ten years in the league the 7'1 center has only posted a double-double in one year. The expectations for this guy have been high every year and every year experts swear he will surprise, and technically he has, only in a bad way.

It is surprising how a player with so much potential and so many physical attributes can not average ten rebounds per game. It is astounding actually.

Well, this is his official second chance.

The fans and the experts have given up on you Mr. Chandler and now you can show them all up. I know it is in you somewhere—can you please show it!

7. LeBron James

4 of 10

Ouch! That's gotta hurt.

The once loyal "witnesses" from around the NBA have all abandoned the poor LeBron James.

After deciding to take his talents to South Beach, LeBron has not heard the end of it. Cleveland fans want him hanged and everyone else is spending their time discussing how the King has now lost all his chances of becoming an all time great.

I will not get into what I think, and whether in my opinion he made the right choice, but I will say that now he can show all of his critics up.

They say you can't play D? Well LeBron, now is your chance to become a monster defender.

They say you can't shoot? Well, come out and shoot the lights out in everyone's face!

They say you aren't clutch? Well, make sure you nail a couple of buzzer beaters!

OK, I will stop now, but bottom line—now is LeBron's chance to silence all the critics and finally silence their biggest criticism—winning a ring...

6. Josh Howard

5 of 10

Well, here we have another case of a player being completely stone walled by the fans after putting up an average-below average season.

First of all, Howard was never really too much of a fan favorite, almost missing the All Star game in 2007 and only cracked the roster due to injuries to both Yao Ming and Carlos Boozer.

So, naturally he could not afford to slip at all, well he did, and he got traded right away.

After being traded to the Wizards he suffered an ACL tear and was out for the year after only four games played for Washington.

Talk about a perfect set up for the Comeback Player of the Year.

He now has the chance to bounce back and make Dallas regret ever turning their back on him. The ball is in your court Mr. Howard.

5. Tracy McGrady

6 of 10

In this picture you will see Tracy McGrady wearing one of his many suites used to ride the bench in style. McGrady has been hit with injuries as hard as any player who has ever played in the NBA.

The sad part is that at one point he was one of the top players in the league. Many seem to forget that. Well, now T-Mac is going to Detroit in order to show everyone that at 31 years of age, he is not done yet.

In his prime, McGrady was one of the deadliest scorers in the NBA and was a perennial All Star. Then he got the old injury bug and he will start next season on his 5th NBA team.

This is the time for McGrady to step up.

4. Michael Beasley

7 of 10

At only 21 years of age, it seems a little early for this guy to have second chances, but unfortunately it isn't.

Beasley was the second overall pick in the 2008 draft with tons of hype around him and in the eyes of many (if not all) he has been one of the biggest busts since Darko Milicic. It is a sad testament to the modern NBA fan who turns on a player in just two years.

Well, after being kicked out of Miami, and sent to Minnesota one would think he would find the support he needed right? Wrong!

Just a little while after joining the Timberwolves, David Kahn (the genius behind drafting Milicic) said this about Beasley:

"He's a very young and immature kid who smoked too much marijuana"

Wow. Throw help and support out of the window. I don't care what he said after those words, bottom line, in his eyes Beasley is a stoner, pure and simple.

This is Beasley's chance to bring his game to new "highs".

3. Elton Brand

8 of 10

This guy on the other hand, wasted no time and quickly established himself as one of the top young players in the NBA after being drafted first overall in 1999.

Well, the injury bug would find him too, and after eight successful seasons in the NBA he went down with injury after injury, and has been a part-time player since.

However, when he plays, he is just a fraction of what he used to be.

He seems slower—and he just doesn't seem focused anymore.

Now that Doug Collins has taken control of coaching Philadelphia, Brand should find all the motivation he needs to step up his game.

2. Allen Iverson

9 of 10

This guy would be number one if he wasn't 35 years old.

The fact is, he does not have too many healthy seasons left. However, I feel like he can do better than playing in China to finish off his Hall of Fame career.

He has publicly stated he will play on the bench and for a guy with an ego as big as his—it probably took a lot to say what he did.

I would hate to see this guy go off to China. Come on NBA!

Give this guy one last day in the sun...

1. Gilbert Arenas

10 of 10

Yikes.

An All-Star player coming off some injury plagued seasons brought guns into his locker room and plays a "joke" on his teammates.

Yeah, I bet Arenas laughed the hardest when he was convicted of a felony and sent to a halfway house.

That was hilarious.

This is probably one of the dumbest moves ever committed by a player in any sport. Not only that, but Arenas also thought it would be funny to pretend to shoot his teammates during pre-game introductions.

Good job!

When he comes back, he better lead the league in scoring, that's about the only thing that could remotely make up for what he did to Wizard fans.

Well, that's it! Thank you for reading, and please comment!
