College Football Rankings: Who Got Screwed In Week 4 Coaches And AP Polls?
Week 4 of college football has just ended and the new polls have come out.
So what else is there to do but figure out who didn't earn enough respect from the media and coaches.
It happens every week, inexplicably teams get the short end of the stick.
Here are 10 teams that got screwed by the Week 4 polls.
10. South Carolina Gamecocks
1 of 10
The Gamecocks headed into their week 4 game against the Auburn Tigers ranked no. 15 by the USAToday coaches' poll.
After their loss, the coaches dropped them seven spots in the standings all the way to no. 22.
South Carolina had the lead to start the fourth quarter 27-21, and let the Tigers score 14 straight points. Despite that, they still had two late drives that would have given the opportunity to come back from an eight-point deficit.
It was a close battle until the end. Yet the coaches showed them no love for the effort by ranking teams such as Penn State and Texas ahead of them.
9. North Carolina State Wolfpack
2 of 10
After not being in the top-25 of the AP or the coaches' poll all season, the Wolfpack finally found themselves ranked number 23 by the press.
However, the coaches' still refuse to acknowledge their 4-0 start and have them sitting outside the top-25 teams. More importantly, their big ACC win against Georgia Tech, 45-28, this weekend came on the road.
GT started the year ranked number 16 on the AP and number 17 on the coaches' poll.
8. Missouri Tigers
3 of 10
With four straight wins to start the season the Missouri Tigers are now ranked no. 23 on the USAToday coaches' poll.
However, the media appear to be less impressed with their start than the coaches. The AP has failed to rank the Tigers among their top-25 despite their early success.
The Tigers have defeated a good San Diego State team last weekend and demolished Miami (Oh.) this weekend 53-13. The same Miami (Oh.) team that gave top-ranked Florida fits to open the season.
7. Utah Utes
4 of 10
The Utes had an easy matchup this weekend against the San Jose State Spartans, who they defeated with no difficulty 56-3.
When a pair of teams ranked ahead of them on the AP poll—Texas and South Carolina—fell to their respective opponents, Utah ranked 13th by the AP probably expected to see themselves move up in the standings.
But they didn't.
Instead two other 4-0 teams jumped right over them, Stanford and LSU. Stanford has yet to defeat a top-25 team, while LSU has already had two near losses against North Carolina and WVU.
The Utes on the other hand, took down the formerly no. 15 ranked Pitt Panthers to open the season.
6. Wisconsin Badgers
5 of 10
Wisconsin has found themselves to be the victim of a lot of AP respect for the Pac-10.
On the AP Poll, two Pac-10 teams have overtaken the Badgers in rankings: Stanford and Arizona.
Arizona did have a big win against Iowa last weekend, however, Stanford has yet to take down a top-ranked opponent.
The Pac-10 is definitely looking solid so far this year but the Badgers should feel slighted with good reason.
Last week, they defeated a Pac-10 opponent in Arizona State—albeit in a close game. But that same ASU team also came close to upsetting top-ranked Oregon this weekend.
On Saturday, they dominated Austin Peay 70-3 and they were rewarded by keeping them ranked at number 11—just like last weekend.
5. Kansas State Wildcats
6 of 10
The Wildcats continue to roll with a 4-0 record.
However, they played a close game against UCF this weekend. Kansas State needed a drive with seconds left on the clock to win.
But despite two wins against a Pac-10 team (UCLA) and a Big 12 opponent (Iowa State), they have yet to crack the top-25 on both the coaches' and AP polls.
4. Arizona Wildcats
7 of 10
The Wildcats were the darlings of last weekend after their big win against Iowa.
But some feel that their close-call against Cal on Saturday was a bit of a letdown. The truth is, the Bears are actually another good team out of the Pac-10.
In fact, the Bears were ranked no. 24 on the Week 2 coaches' poll.
Arizona has now notched two big wins in a row. One against a Big Ten powerhouse, another against a Pac-10 opponent.
Yet the Stanford Cardinal has passed them on both the AP and coaches' poll for having the same record and beating arguably weaker opponents.
3. UCLA Bruins
8 of 10
The Bruins don't look anything like the team that started the season 0-2 after their amazing takedown of a top-10 team in the Texas Longhorns this weekend.
That makes two straight wins against top-25 opponents. Last week they dispatched the Houston Cougars, 31-13 and this week they were even more impressive by defeating the Longhorns 34-12 on the road.
How do the coaches feel about their performance? Apparently they didn't care since UCLA only earned one point on the coaches' poll.
2. Oregon State Beavers
9 of 10
For a team that has played two of the nation's top-5 teams to very close, well-fought games, Oregon State has received very little respect from the coaches and the media.
The Beavers play out of the extremely competitive Pac-10 and they have already battled two extremely tough opponents before even going into conference play.
As a result their 1-2 record is deceiving. They performed well on the road against Boise State, where the Broncos have not been defeated for what seems like an eternity. And they also had a strong performance against TCU to open the season.
On this week's poll, the Beavers received zero votes from the coaches and have fallen out of the top-25.
1. TCU Horned Frogs
10 of 10
Prior to their game against SMU this weekend, the Horned Frogs were sitting pretty ranked no. 4 on the AP Poll.
They went on to win the game 41-24.
Upon the release of this week's poll, the Horned Frogs fell to number five, with the Oregon Ducks overtaking them at number four.
Perhaps the AP felt that TCU didn't earn the win against SMU in a dominating fashion. But the Ducks didn't exactly win easily either, fighting off a possible upset by winning 42-31.
Either the media has a lot of love for the Pac-10 or they just don't favor BCS-busters.
