Phoenix Suns Say Stay for a While: What Alvin Gentry's Extension Signals

Patrick ClarkeSep 24, 2010

If you don't already know by now, the Phoenix Suns' Alvin Gentry recently signed an extension with the team to be the head coach through the 2012-13 season.

So where do we go from here?

Well, those closest to the Sun's situation would tell you that no one matches Phoenix's style of play better than Alvin Gentry, who took over for Terry Porter midway through the 2008-09 season.

Since that time, Gentry has gone 72-41, including an impressive 46-12 record at home in that span.

But next season is sure to be a challenge for Gentry. All-Star forward Amar'e Stoudemire is in New York, the Suns have added new pieces to an already tight-knit group, and the Western conference isn't getting any easier.

Gentry's extension signals several things from the Phoenix franchise. One being that the success experienced under Gentry's short tenure is expected to continue with the plethora of young talent at his disposal. With players like Robin Lopez, Goran Dragic, and Jared Dudley all playing vital roles on last year's team.

Also, Gentry's resigning signals the success of an offensive-first mentality combined with a little defensive effort. Many of those D'antoni teams from 2004-08 failed to even win the western conference because of the limited focus on defense.

Gentry proved that an offensive team can have success if they rotate on defense, and present unique looks, like in the conference finals when he switched to a 2/3 zone to slow the Lakers.

Lastly, we learned that Steve Nash will likely continue to shock the rest of the league for the remainder of his contract. Under Gentry, Nash has the keys to one of the most accelerated and fine-tuned offenses in league history. Because of this, his point and assist averages will probably mirror those of a point guard 15 years younger.

A blueprint for success, a proven system, and an explosive roster with veteran leadership, it's Gentry's time.
