Right Team, Wrong Conference: Boise State Has No Chance to Win BCS Title

Josh DelpSep 21, 2010

Boise State has gained more and more recognition these past couple of years for their increasingly competitive football team.

It all started with their breakthrough performance against Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. People started to think mid-major schools might be able to hang with the big dogs.

A week and a half ago the Broncos were being highly considered as one of the best teams in the country as a result of their 33-30 win against Virginia Tech, the then-No. 10 team in the nation in what was essentially a road game at Washington’s FedEx Field.

If they could run the table and finish undefeated, the national title game was not too far out of reach.

That is, until the Hokies faltered against FCS squad James Madison to go to 0-2 on the season.

Boise State’s win doesn’t look all that impressive now. Funny how one loss can impact so many outlooks. As expected, the Broncos wiped their Week 2 opponent Wyoming off the face of the earth with a 51-6 win. That should help for style points. That’s what they are dependent on at this point in a weak Western Athletic Conference. It’s unfortunate really.

It serves as yet another reason for a playoff system. FCS football does it; now the FBS should follow along. I am aware that the current BCS system hauls in the money, but let’s try to keep what’s best for the game above the interest of what’s best for the execs and their financial status.

The Boise State Broncos are a great team. They most likely will finish the season undefeated for the second consecutive season but once again will be brushed aside for the big game due to, you guessed it, corporate greed. Plain and simple.

In the meantime, I’ll call this now: Boise State finishes No. 3 or 4 in the nation with a perfect record, missing out on another title game. What a shame. But hey, at least the NCAA has its pockets full—and that’s what really matters in sports, right?
