Georgia Football: Is Mississippi State a Must-Win for Mark Richt?
Yes.
I could just leave it at that because it’s quite obvious. Some consider him already on the hot seat. And a loss to the current worst team in the SEC West would cause uproar in not only Athens but the nation would be wondering what is going wrong with Richt.
Mississippi State shares the same record as Georgia (1-2, 0-2 in SEC play). This game is a stepping stone for either team. A win for the Bulldogs from Athens could set them on the right path to saving their season. A loss would be devastating and possibly be the end for Mark Richt.
A win for the Bulldogs from Starkville would give them major confidence for the remainder of their season. Both teams’ schedules are quite similar. Their two loses come from ranked SEC foes and they both have a couple ranked teams still to play.
Second-year head coach Dan Mullen sees this game as a way to jump start the Mississippi State program. Mark Richt is in his tenth year as Georgia’s head coach and should see this game as a win.
Georgia hasn’t lost the Bulldog Bowl since 1974, currently holding a nine-game win streak against Mississippi State. The past two games ended current win streaks for Georgia. They had won four straight in Columbia and six in a row against Arkansas.
Will another streak come to an end this weekend?
I highly doubt it. Georgia hasn’t lost three consecutive games under the Mark Richt era. And it’s not going to start now. They’re the better Bulldogs and come Saturday it will show.
This is a must win for Mark Richt if he wants to silence the haters. Granted they’ll say its Mississippi State we’re supposed to beat them.
But don’t look past them. I guarantee Mark Richt isn’t.
