An Open Letter To Reggie Bush

Kelly ScalettaSep 14, 2010

Dear Mr. Bush,

Last week I wrote, "All the things that Reggie Bush is saying indicate that he wants to be perceived as having matured and grown beyond that kid who took that money and those gifts, and is now carrying cities around on his back. Until he actually carries his own history on his back though, he can't carry anything except a ball. If he wants to be perceived as having grown and matured then the best thing for him to do is to grow and mature. The best way for him to do that is for him to relieve the Heisman committee of having to take this action and with a full confession and apology, return it of his own volition first."

This week you did precisely that. Writers will often be critical when an athlete is on one side of a story, and then run from the story when athlete in question does what the writer has suggested. I'm under no delusion that your actions were in any way based on my scarcely read article, but out of personal integrity, I would like to commend you for your actions today.

I'm sure that there will be some who criticize you for caving in, and others who will criticize you for not going far enough while others will criticize you for a lack of remorse in your accompanying statement. I applaud you in your action though. It shows a very large step in the right direction.  I commend you in your effort to help other young student-athletes avoid the same mistakes. It is indeed, a mature decision, and I commend you.

Sincerely,

Kelly Scaletta
