College Football Hot Seat Rankings: Frank Beamer, Tim Brewster Make Week 3 Cut
It takes much more than a bad week to make the Hot Seat Rankings, but just because you win doesn't mean you won't be added.
Just ask West Virginia's Bill Stewart if he isn't feeling a little heat after a too-close-for-comfort, overtime win against Marshall.
There are some new faces on the list, while 2-0 starts by two big-time coaches (Rich Rodriguez and Ralph Friedgen) have given them a reprieve.
There's also a new feature: The Hot Seat-ometer has been added in the Week 3 Hot Seat Rankings. The rankings are on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the worst-case scenario.
10. Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech
1 of 10
Beamer has been on this list before. Of course, it was in 1989, and thanks to a 6-4-1 season he got off it for a long time.
Following losses to Boise State and FCS foe James Madison, Beamer is close to going down the same route as Bobby Bowden. He's not there yet, but he needs to right the ship now and make the Hokies relevant again.
The defense was supposed to be young and suspect early in the season, but the offense let Virginia Tech down in a disappointing home loss to JMU.
Hot Seat-ometer: 1 (on a scale of 1-5)
9. Bill Stewart, West Virginia
2 of 10
Stewart may have bolted to the top of this list if not for an amazing comeback against in-state rival Marshall last Friday.
Many Mountaineer fans have questioned the Stewart hiring since WVU's senior administration pulled off a late-night, behind closed doors deal following an upset victory over Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.
The Mountaineers are 2-0 and still may be the favorites to win the Big East. Stewart could bounce on and off this list all season considering the fickleness of most WVU fans.
Hot Seat-ometer: 2 (on a scale of 1-5)
8. Butch Davis, North Carolina
3 of 10
Davis cracks the Top 10 this week during a bye week for the Tar Heels.
The off-the-field issues are starting to pile up, and he may not be able to overcome them.
However, if he can keep the Tar Heels together and make a run at the ACC title, certainly the UNC brass will forgive him. Right?
Hot Seat-ometer: 2.5 (on a scale of 1-5)
7. Ron Zook, Illinois
4 of 10
Zook improved his standing with a solid 35-3 victory over Southern Illinois to improve to 1-1. Mikel LeShoure ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns to help his coach.
It may be too much to expect the Fighting Illini to take too much from this game, but it's not a bad place to start.
Zook may actually be doing his best coaching job in years. Even in the opening loss to Missouri, Illinois played well. There's a good chance the Illini will be 2-1 after facing Northern Illinois next.
Hot Seat-ometer: 3 (on a scale of 1-5)
6. Bob Toledo, Tulane
5 of 10
Toledo was once a big-time coach who almost led UCLA to a national championship.
Now he's just an aging coach trying to find the magic again at a program that has very little chance of being relevant.
By now, Toledo was supposed to be winning enough to get the Green Wave into a bowl game. He'll be lucky to win three games.
Hot Seat-ometer: 3.5 (on a scale of 1-5)
5. Tim Brewster, Minnesota
6 of 10
There's been a love-hate relationship since Brewster arrived at Minnesota. Now the venom is flowing freely from the Gophers' fans.
Minnesota's 41-38 loss to FCS opponent South Dakota is too much for the Brewster haters. In a recent Minneapolis Star Tribune poll, approximately 15,000 voters said he should be fired immediately.
Do you think Minnesota fans miss Glen Mason now?
Hot Seat-ometer: 3.5 (on a scale of 1-5)
4. Todd Dodge, North Texas
7 of 10
Outside of Denton, Texas, no one really cares what happens to Dodge.
But the former hotshot high school coach has not adjusted to the college game, and the clock is ticking.
It's difficult to find many wins on the schedule, so Dodge is close to becoming a poor man's Gerry Faust.
Hot Seat-ometer: 3.5 (on a scale of 1-5)
3. Rick Neuheisel, UCLA
8 of 10
What happened to the Golden Boy?
Neuheisel's magic touch is gone, and the Bruins are 0-2 after back-to-back embarrassing losses. UCLA hired the former Bruins quarterback to lead his alma mater back to Pac-10 prominence. Instead UCLA is an offensive laughingstock.
Neuheisel is earning a ton of cash to be this bad. If he could find a quarterback, Neuheisel would be a much happier coach.
Hot Seat-ometer: 3.5 (on a scale of 1-5)
2. Paul Wulff, Washington State
9 of 10
Washington State won last week, so of course Wulff's job status is improving. Think again.
The Cougars had to score 16 fourth-quarter points to pull out a 23-22 win over FCS opponent Montana State to end a 10-game losing skid.
Wulff is running out of time, and he may be out of victories.
Hot Seat-ometer: 4.5 (on a scale of 1-5)
1. Mike Locksley, New Mexico
10 of 10
Wouldn't it just be easier for New Mexico to end the Locksley experiment right now?
So far in 2010 the Lobos have been outscored 124-17 in two games, and New Mexico gets No. 14 Utah this week.
Hey Mike, it was great knowing you.
