Michigan Wolverines Football Week 2 Review

Jabber HeadSep 11, 2010

Well I’m not one that likes to toot his own horn but...toot toot. My preview was right on target and my score prediction was right on. Now only if I could get the lotto numbers right. It was another great game and very fun for fans to watch.

What we learned about the offense

I think it's safe to say Denard Robinson is a dynamic player. He looks like a one-man show out there at times. He is a team player, though, and will tell you he couldn't do it without his teammates, but he has been spectacular to say the least.

He has 885 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 0 turnovers in two games. He has not only burst onto the scene, but many believe he is a Heisman candidate at this point because of his play. Denard looks like a magician in the backfield at times, eluding multiple defenders and throwing completions.

Robinson displayed composure late in the game driving the wolverines 72 yards in under 4 minutes to lead the Wolverines to a win over the Irish. It was all Robinson on the drive too. He was 5-of-5 passing and ran the ball a handful of times.

The shifty QB was able to compile 502 yards of total offense this game. He also became only the ninth quarterback to run for over 200 yards and pass for over 200 yards in a game and this is only his second career start.

What we learned about the defense

Well, the defense held up nicely at times, but had lapses and allowed some big plays. A 95-yard touchdown pass to a tight end is inexcusable. Michigan was able to get three interceptions in this game. It was great to see the defense making some plays. If the defense can do this consistently and give this Wolverines offense more opportunities, then Michigan will be tough to beat.

The Low Down

Robinson has been nothing short of spectacular. Words really can't describe his play. Michigan has been creative with QB draws and passes that fake Denard running and it really opens up the offense. I said Denard would be the starter this year and I knew he improved his passing ability, but never did I expect to see back to back performances like this.

Michigan struggled some in the second half, but a lot of it had to do with Michigan and not Notre Dame. Michigan had multiple drives killed by penalties, a dropped touchdown pass, and a few missed field goals. The Wolverines made many mistakes that could have cost them, but luckily it didn't this time. They will need to continue to improve, but with Denard lining up at quarterback, I like their chances to compete in any game.

The kicking game really concerns me though. I really feel this could come back to haunt Michigan in the future if it doesn’t get worked out.

Michigan has two games coming up where they should be able to win handily and be able to rest Robinson some and protect him from getting injured before Big Tem plays opens up. Things should be interesting this year and Denard is certainly going to be fun to watch!
