College Football Week 2: 10 Teams That Grabbed the Spotlight
Week two of college football brought us plenty of anticipated matchups but most of those games were not as close as we expected.
On the bright side, fans weren't left with just nothing to talk about.
There were some big upsets that surprised us, two teams in the Top 15 fell to unranked opponents.
Here are 10 teams that grabbed the spotlight in the second week of college football.
10. Ohio State Buckeyes
1 of 10
The game between the No. 2-ranked Buckeyes and the No. 12-ranked Hurricanes was a highly anticipated battle between two top teams.
The Buckeyes defense gave Miami (Fla.) quarterback Jacory Harris fits, as he threw a career-high 4 INTs. While Randy Shannon told the AP that his receivers ran the wrong routes on two of those plays, he expressed frustration in Harris for not simply throwing the ball away.
On offense, quarterback Terrelle Pryor was credited with keeping plays alive for the Buckeyes. Though he only completed 12-of-27 passes for 233 yards and 1 TD, Pryor was able to resort to his strength—running the ball. On the ground, Pryor gained 113 yards and 1 TD.
The biggest stat of the game was in turnovers: Ohio State 0, Miami (Fla.) 4
9. Utah Utes
2 of 10
The UNLV Running Rebels were no match for the Utah Utes during the Utes' Week 2 win, 38-10.
UNLV's only touchdown came when Nate Carter blocked a Sean Sellwood punt and Tim Hasson ran the ball 19 yards for a score.
Utah's defense limited the Rebels running game to 102 total yards on 42 carries.
Shaky Smithson was the star of the game. He collected a 55-yard pass for a TD and returned a punt 77 yards for his second touchdown.
8. Nebraska Cornhuskers
3 of 10
Nebraska scored 31 straight points before the Idaho Vandals converted a 34-yard field goal with no time left on the clock, to end the second quarter.
Nebraska eventually won the game 38-17 but their defense was the story.
The Cornhuskers picked the ball 5 times from Vandals quarterback Nathan Enderle. They also stopped the Idaho running game, which had 60 yards on 38 carries.
Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez didn't pass for a touchdown but rushed for 157 yards and 2 TDs.
7. Iowa Hawkeyes
4 of 10
Iowa Hawkeyes, a team known for their shut-down defense, also showed plenty of offense in their week 2 matchup.
The Hawkeyes easily defeated the Iowa State Cyclones 35-7.
Quarterback Ricky Stanzi threw for 11-of-18 passes, 204 yards and 2 TDs. Iowa running backs combined for 275 yards on 50 carries and 3 TDs.
6. TCU Horned Frogs
5 of 10
The Horned Frogs dismantled their opponents from Tennessee Tech, 62-7.
Their most impressive statistic was that their ground game accounted for a whopping seven-of-nine total touchdowns, and eight different players found the end zone during the game.
TCU accounted for 452 total yards on offense, while Tennessee Tech only collected 150 offensive yards.
5. Oklahoma Sooners
6 of 10
This game was not as close as some expected, with the Sooners defeating the Seminoles 47-17.
Dark-horse Heisman-hopeful Christian Ponder was shut down by the Sooners defense. Ponder only completed 11-of-28 passes, 113 yards, 0 TDs and 2 interceptions.
On offense, quarterback Landry Jones was impressive converting 30-of-40 passes for 380 yards and 4 TDs.
For Florida State, that new defensive scheme still needs more fine tuning.
4. South Carolina Gamecocks
7 of 10
This was definitely a big win for Steve Spurrier's South Carolina team against SEC rival Georgia.
Last season, the two teams played a high-scoring game with the Bulldogs earning a close 41-37 victory at home.
This year, the Gamecocks were happy to get revenge with a 17-6 win.
Freshman Marcus Lattimore was the star of the game, rushing for 182 yards on 38 carries and notching 2 touchdowns.
3. Alabama Crimson Tide
8 of 10
Nick Saban has a lot of love and respect for legend Joe Paterno. Leading up to the game he even asked Crimson Tide fans not to boo JoePa during the visit.
But that didn't stop his Alabama team from taking down the Nittany Lions, 24-3.
Alabama's defense shut down Penn State most of the game, only allowing a field goal with less than 10 minutes left to play.
'Bama picked Penn State freshman quarterback Robert Bolden twice and limited him to 144 yards on 13-for-29 passing.
Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram wasn't missed, as Trent Richardson ran for 144 yards on 22 carries and one touchdown. Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy threw for 229 yards and 2 TDs.
2. Kansas Jayhawks
9 of 10
What's the best way to recover from a stunning opening week loss to an FCS team?
Defeat a top-ranked team of your own.
The Jayhawks pulled off their own stunning upset by beating Georgia Tech 28-25.
New starting quarterback Jordan Webb looked great completing 18-for-29 passes, 179 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT.
After taking the lead 28-17 in the fourth quarter, the Jayhawks were able to successfully hold on to lead and come away with a tremendous win.
1. James Madison Dukes
10 of 10
Their Week 2 game against Virginia Tech was the biggest upset win of James Madison's history.
After losing a close game to Boise State during Monday's season opener, the Hokies were looking to dispatch the Dukes with ease.
But their plans for an easy win didn't come to fruition. Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw for 1 INT and lost a fumble.
VaTech now starts their season 0-2 and the most-talked about team of college football is now James Madison.
James Madison quarterback Drew Dudzik got everything done for the Dukes by accounting for all three of their touchdowns, one by air and two on ground.
