College Football 2010- Week 2 Is Full Of Heisman Head To Heads

Aaron CardenSep 10, 2010

After the initial excitement and zeal of the opening weekend in college football, week two of the season tends to slow down. The Top 25 scoreboard is usually filled with lopsided scores from big schools beating up on FCS schools and the games are more like glorified practices (Sorry Ole Miss fans). Yup, not much going on in week two... Until this year.

This year we are treated to four games between ranked teams, Notre Dame-Michigan, which now seems relevant again as well as some other games that should be close and entertaining. The best part of this college weekend will be watching not only match-ups between great teams, but their are several Heisman Trophy head to head comparisons this week. Set your DVR, turn off the phone, and get your picture in picture ready. Let's take a look at some of the match-ups for this weekend.

College Football Playoff National Championship: Head Coaches News Conference

#18 Penn State at #1 Alabama

This game is loaded with lore, legend, and plenty of hype. How will Penn State freshman QB Robert Bolden handle the pressure that the Alabama front seven are going to bring? Will Even Royster be able to rebound from his down performance against Youngstown St? Nick Saban has not ruled out the reigning Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram but it is not looking like a safe bet he will suit up. Julio Jones will have a tougher task against the Penn State secondary than he did last week but, if he can put up a similar game, may emerge as the top wide receiver in the Heisman race.

Prediction- Alabama 27 Penn State 10 Too much of Alabama on the ground and Bolden gets welcomed to Big Time college football by getting an up close and personal look of the grass at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

#12 Miami at #2 Ohio State

This game is one of my favorites on the schedule for the season. I think Jacory Harris is a phenomenal player that has an improved offensive line giving him plenty of time to throw. Terrell Pryor is the Heisman front runner at this point and the Buckeye defense is just as stingy as the one Pryor will be facing. I personally think Miami is under rated and will look to prove that they are a player in not just the ACC, but in the national title picture as well. This game will probably vault the better playing quarterback into the top of most Heisman lists.

Prediction- Ohio St 31 Miami 27 Too much Pryor and Brandon Saine in this one. Harris is able to keep Miami close until the end but falls short. Look for Pryor to cement himself as the early Heisman favorite.

#17 Florida State at #10 Oklahoma

Oklahoma struggled against Utah State at home while Heisman dark horse Christian Ponder threw for 167 yard and 4 touchdowns in the first half against Florida A&M. DeMarco Murray put himself in Heisman talks with his offensive explosion. He ran for 208 yards and 2 touchdowns in his first game but the holes will be smaller to work with this week. Landry Jones had a respectable game but will have to make better and faster decisions this week if the Sooners are to have a chance.

Prediction- Florida State 35 Oklahoma 24 Ponder uses his accuracy to open up the running game for the 'Noles and increases his awareness in Heisman voters minds. I see a big game from Murray but a down game for Jones. Mark Stoops' defense holds of for the victory over his brother's Sooners.

#22 Georgia at #24 South Carolina

While we still down know the status of a few players on each side, one thing is for certain, losing AJ Green for this game is huge for Georgia. His ability to make plays and catches in traffic will be missed as South Carolina's defense is tough. Georgia didn't stumble at home last week but this is a road game at a very hostile SEC rival. The Georgia defense must keep South Carolina to a low score if they are to have a chance in this one.

Prediction- South Carolina 17 Georgia 13 The Gamecocks defense stymies Georgia for most of the game and Stephen Garcia continues to show his growth as a quarterback. Close game but a a South Carolina win.

Grab the remote and settle in for a good relaxing weekend of football.
