College Football Week 2 Predictions: Great and Greater Games

Chad MiddletonSep 9, 2010

First of all, I have to pat myself on the back. Last week, I went 11-1 on my predictions with my only blemish coming from the Boise State-Virginia Tech game. Blast those Broncos!

But I am sure I won't be the only person Boise State will cause trouble for this year (cough BCS cough).

Now, this weekend coming up is a serious week. All jokes aside, you will see a few teams' BCS national championship hopes be dashed this week. But let's chat about a couple of things from last week.

Props to North Carolina. Heck of a battle against LSU. You really showed your heart and that game was yours. Woe to you LSU. You have problems coming soon. Your defense is leaky.

South Carolina looked good. Steve Spurrier may not have been joking about the talent he has. Let's face it—South Carolina goes under the radar. You know why? Because by Week 2 they always have a loss. That Week 2 game every year is Georgia. Once the Bulldogs give the Gamecocks that L, we never really care about Spurrier's mignons. Will that change this year? I address that below.

A.J. Green. Stupid. $1,000 for a jersey to someone who qualifies as an agent. I do applaud your apology. Nice way to man up.

On to the picks, folks.

South Carolina vs. Georgia

Yeah, I'm taking the Gamecocks this week. I think Georgia will miss A.J. in its receiving corps, but I also think South Carolina needs this game. Spurrier needs this game. This is just the beginning of a series of important games for the Gamecocks, but this is a nice beginning. USC 20 Georgia 17.

Florida State at Oklahoma

This game will define the season in Tallahassee. Welcome to big game action, Jimbo Fisher. Being your first year as head coach, the fans will forgive you if you lose this game. But did you see that spark in his eye last week? He wants this game to make an immediate name for himself. Last week's game against Samford was preseason. The Seminoles did their best "let's not look past this game" approach, and it worked.

Bob Stoops needs this game too. The Sooners looked less than impressive against Utah State, and some yearn for the yesteryear of Sam Bradford. Sam is not coming home, folks. I am calling an upset. FSU 35 OU 28.

Miami at Ohio State

If you watched the Buckeyes last week, you may have noticed Terrelle Pryor looked like a mature quarterback. He stayed in the pocket. He made good reads. He led his team to victory. Jacory Harris looked equally impressive, tossing three touchdown passes along with 210 yards passing.

Ohio State has to worry about Miami's speed. Miami has to worry about Ohio State's defense. This isn't FAMU, and this isn't Marshall. I have my reservations because I can see Miami pulling a stunner, but just not in the Horseshoe. OSU 21 Miami 20.

Penn State at Alabama

Rookie quarterback vs. national championship team. Doesn't look good for Penn State. Alabama 28 PSU 6.

Notre Dame vs. Michigan

I like the heart and soul of Brian Kelly. He makes Notre Dame better by his presence. Rich Rodriguez—well—he's the coach of Michigan. I don't expect too much out of either of these teams this year, but I have to think Notre Dame will win this. Notre Dame 27 Michigan 24.

Mississippi at Tulane

Why am I wasting your time with this? Because I need a sounding board. Unacceptable, Mississippi. Unacceptable and inexcusable. You can't lose to a Division I-AA school unless it's hockey. I have a feeling practice in Mississippi was long, hot, and sweaty. Tulane, I am sorry, but I have to think Mississippi is going to open a can. Mississippi 42 Tulane 17.

Oregon at Tennessee

When you beat a team 72-0, you disrespect them. Oregon disrespected New Mexico last week, and if I'm New Mexico, I would remember that. I mean, they won't ever be able to beat Oregon unless they hire the Expendables, but you never forget a 72-0 drubbing.

Enter Tennessee. It's been a rough offseason for the Vols. Losing their "coach" had to be tough. But it's Lane Kiffin. They are better off without him. Oregon will see the SEC is much better than the Mountain West. But Oregon will still steal a victory. Oregon 38 Tennessee 31.

South Florida at Florida

If you have 13 bad snaps and still win, you must be Florida. The Tim Tebow-free era started kind of Pillsbury. It was light and fluffy. This week, Florida gets another Duncan Hines type of opponent. South Florida is not bad, but not enough to stop the Gators. Florida 41 USF 14
